Heading into her 12th season at the helm of the Revere High School girls? tennis team, Carla Maniscalco finds herself trying to figure out what to expect from her team this season. With the weather playing havoc with practice schedules and with many new players to evaluate, Maniscalco is faced with certain challenges. She knows that she has certain aspirations for the season, hoping her group of young players will continue to grow and learn.
?[Last year] I had a lot of new players that worked hard throughout the season,” Maniscalco said.
The relatively youthful Revere Patriots squad will not have too many holes left by departing players; the team lost just two seniors to graduation. Sara Gryjic and Yemeni Mazo, both singles players, graduated after the 2014 season.
Maniscalco hopes for big things out of all of her returning players, especially a group of seniors that includes Leila Darouey, Rim Lerari, Alejandra Escobar and Andrea Rueda.?[They] should be important leaders for the team,” said Maniscalco.
As far as expectations go, it?s likely far too early to be predicting wins and losses without knowing exactly what the team will look like. But Maniscalco does have some more general expectations of her players coming into the year.?I expect all my players to continue to grow as athletes and to show dedication to the sport and team,” Maniscalco said. The Revere High squad will be stuck indoors for the time being, though Maniscalco says that beginning the season inside is just the norm for the tennis team. But, she hopes her players will be able to see time on an outdoor court sometime in the near future. The Patriots will kick off their season on April 6, taking on Beverly at home at Gibson Park.
