PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A Saugus man wanted in connection with a police-involved shooting in Cambridge Friday morning was found dead of an apparent suicide in a New Hampshire hotel room later that night.Nicholas Cammarata, 30, of Saugus, was wanted on warrants in Middlesex County issued March 12 because he violated a condition of his release on charges of assault to murder; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; and two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon; Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Saturday.Cambridge Police and Ryan described Cammarata as a person of interest in connection with a breaking and entering in progress reported in the area of Fifth and Gore streets Friday morning. Cambridge Police said officers chased Cammarata on foot after he allegedly broke into an abandoned building, and Cammarata allegedly fired at least one shot at police.Nobody was injured, Ryan said.Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen DuBuis told reporters Friday night that Cambridge Police had given local police a tip that Cammarata might be staying in a Portsmouth hotel.Detectives later found Cammarata at an America’s Best Inn and evacuated the area. DuBuis said officers contacted Cammarata first by phone, but he hung up. Cammarata then allegedly stuck his head outside a hotel room window where he was confronted by officers. After the window closed, a gunshot was heard. Police said they found Cammarata dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Ryan said the Cambridge incident and Cammarata’s death remain active investigations.
