School Roundup: St. Mary’s girls’ tennis begins with whitewash of Marian

The St. Mary?s girls? tennis team blanked visiting Marian, 5-0, in its first match of the season Wednesday. Team captains Kelly Harrington and Julie Shea each contributed in wins for the team. Harrington took the first singles? match in a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Christina Hallisey and freshman Mia Nikolakopoulos each won their singles? matches 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, Shea teamed up with first-year player Kristin Tansey for a 6-4, 6-0 victory, while Ana de Bernardo and Krista Bertocchi won their doubles match, 6-1, 6-3.
BOYS? TENNIS
St. John?s 5, Malden Catholic 0
The Eagles captured their first win of the year with a clean sweep of Malden Catholic. Scott Riester and Mike Prokopis both swept their singles? matches, and Evan Maguire won the third singles? match. Both doubles? pairs won their respective matches, with Matteo Jacone and Nick Salacci taking the first match and Andrew Cadigan and Dan Cunningham taking the second.
BOYS? LACROSSE
Beverly 16, Salem 2
The Panthers improved to 2-0 on after a dominant win. Chris Vallette and Clinton Cabral each scored five points for Beverly, with Vallette scoring three goals and two assists and Cabral scoring two goals and three assists.
Jordan Rawding added a goal and two assists, while Elias Crandell (two goals), Ian Butler (one goal, one assist) and Sean Kalivas (one goal, one assist) each had a multiple-point game. Sam Abate, Nick Diluiso, Peter Mulumba, Spencer Hunter, Matt Rawding and Keegan Kolbert each scored one goal. Goaltender Kevin Morency had three saves on five shots in the win.
Bishop Fenwick 14, Cardinal Spellman 3
The Crusaders picked up their first win of the season in convincing fashion. Fenwick (1-0) was led by Mark Nalesnik?s seven points (five goals, two assists). Chris Napolitano notched three goals and an assist, and Aidan Moulton scored three goals as well. Jake Mitchell, Chris Terry and Dan Hannon each scored one goal. Goaltenders Dylan Maita and Devon Fiandica combined for eight saves in the win.
Northeast 14, Lynn Tech 2
The Tigers dropped to 0-2 after a tough loss at home. Mitch Smigielski and Justin Taylor scored the two goals for Tech. “It?s a learning process,” said Tech coach Jay Richards. “We?re playing hard and playing until the last whistle, and there?s not much more you can ask for.”
GIRLS? LACROSSE
Bishop Fenwick 19, Cardinal Spellman 1
Bishop Fenwick (1-0) rolled to an easy victory over Cardinal Spellman Wednesday afternoon behind a high-powered offense and some solid goaltending. Merry Harrington was the leading scorer for the Crusaders with eight points (five goals, three assists). Tori Hernandez had six points (five goals, one assist). Hannah Durkin and Colbi Flickinger each scored two goals, and Flickinger added an assist as well. Molly Camelo, Ellen Fantozzi, Jackie Hart, Lauren Coccoluto and Brigid Waldron each scored one goal. Goalie Colleen Corcoran put forth a solid effort the entire game.
GIRLS’ TRACK
Beverly 108, Winthrop 24
Beverly (1-0) scored a solid victory over visiting Winthrop. Gracie Sparkman won the shot put with a distance of 32 feet, 3 inches and the discus with a distance of 88-7. Colleen Pierce won the triple jump with a distance of 30-2. Nora Monahan won the 400-meter low hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 14.2 seconds and Haylea Northcott took the 100 meters (13.4). Melissa Lubas won the 400 meters (1:09), and Julia Curtin took the 800 meters (2:25). Abby Walsh won the mile (5:31) and Danielle Bertaux won the two-mile race (12:18).
