School Roundup: Lynn Shamrocks suffer first loss of season

April 3, 2015 by Mike Alongi

Despite losing, 9-4, to Malden on Thursday at Manning Field, Lynn Shamrocks coach Peter Pappagianopoulos came away pleased with the way his team battled through all four quarters.
?These kids wanted to keep working. They fought right to the end,” Pappagianopoulos said. “That was something that we didn?t see at times last year.”
The Shamrocks (1-1) struggled to get a consistent offensive attack going against Malden despite Sean Hemenway turning in a hat trick and Corey Wojewodzic netting his seventh goal in two games. The big problem for Lynn came at the defensive end as a well-drilled Golden Tornadoes team took advantage of little mistakes by the Shamrocks.
?You could tell that they?ve been practicing on a field while we?ve been inside a gym,” Pappagianopoulos said. “A lot of it for us was being in the wrong position defensively. It?s a lot difference space-wise when you?re on a field compared to being inside. It will come in time and with practice.”
BOYS? LACROSSE
Boston College High 12, St. John?s Prep 11
The Eagles (0-2) saw an 8-4 third-quarter lead turn into a defeat when BC High?s Sam Friedman scored with 18 seconds left to complete a 7-3 game-ending scoring run.
K.J. Sarni gave the Eagles a 10-8 lead through three quarters but the Prep scored just once in the fourth as BC High rallied. Ted Sanford had a hat trick for the Prep with Sarni and Owen Rockett each scoring twice. Hayden Rockett, Art Churchwell, Hayden Brown and Tim Tyrrell also had goals for St. John?s.
GIRLS? LACROSSE
Beverly 8, Ipswich 7
Beverly improved to 2-0 with a thrilling win over Ipswich. After a 5-5 tie in the first half, the Panthers made some key defensive adjustments that allowed them to slow down the visiting Tigers. Megan Gavin led the Panthers with four goals, including the game winner in the second half. Elizabeth Musumeci added two goals, while Marita Smallman and Grace Otterbein each netted one.
?It was a close game the whole way,” Beverly coach Alyson Healey said. “Ipswich has a strong team with some great offensive players, and we had to make adjustments.”
BOYS? TENNIS
Melrose 4, Lynnfield 1
Lynnfield had a tough start to the season. The lone win for the Pioneers came in doubles? play as Ethan Soriest and Danny Bronshvayg won their match 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Austin Prep 5, Bishop Fenwick 0
The Crusaders dropped to 0-1. Hunter McDonough, Greg Mattucci and Conner Adams put up a good effort in singles? play. The doubles? teams of Wil Bethune and Jack Palmachuk and Kevin Barnum and Alex Mizioch also played hard, but came up just short.
