The Revere High girls’ lacrosse team is readying for its spring season under the direction of new coach Karen Atkinson, who says her team has been working hard to prepare for the season.
?Our offseason has been great thus far, especially being able to be outside on the turf,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson added that the team has benefited from the offseason, which has allowed them to focus on learning the mechanics of the game.
?I have spent majority of the time going over fundamentals and stick work, focusing primarily on understanding the movements,” Atkinson said. “Having three weeks prior to our first game has been beneficial and allowed us to slow things down.”
The leadership from returning players will be a crucial part of this season’s team. Atkinson said she believes her returning players will have a major role in the team’s success.
? The strength of this season’s team is the eagerness to learn and drive to succeed,” Atkinson said. “I have thrown a lot of different stick work, drills and concepts at them and they have worked hard at each and every new thing. I am relying on the returning players to help create a strong program and they have been doing a fantastic job.”
One of the areas Atkinson hopes to improve is building her team’s confidence to attack on the offensive end. She believes it will help the team close the necessary gaps.
?I think an improvement that I look for as a team is the goal differential within the games,” Atkinson said. “I believe that the team needs to have the confidence to go to goal because we will never score unless we fill the lanes, cut with a purpose and attempt to score.”
Atkinson said she’s anticipating the new season.
?I have high expectations this season,” she said. “I believe the girls have great potential and I am looking forward to seeing it all come together.”The team opens its season on Tuesday, traveling to Winthrop High School.
