The 60th annual Harry Agganis basketball tournament began Thursday night at St. George Greek Orthodox Church?s Agganis Gym.
In the first of three games, St. Vasilios of Peabody defeated St. George of Lynn, 44-29, behind a strong offensive effort from Mike Katsoulos, who scored a game-high 14 points. Panos Karalas paced St. George with 12 points.
Game No.2 featured the first high school level girls? contest of the tournament, a 37-21 victory for St. George over St. Vasilios. Winthrop High School senior all-starsKristen Siscamanis and Niki Tsiotos finished with 8 points each in the win.
St. George?s boys? entry for the high school level capped off the evening with a 62-41 triumph over Arlington, highlighted by a big offensive game from Lynn Classical?sStrati Saranteas(14 points).
The tournament runs through Sunday, with the finals at Agganis Gym. Games will also be played at St. Mary?s Tony Conigliaro Gym and at the Fecteau-Leary School gym.
The 10th annual George K. Mazareas Recognition Award will be presented on Sunday. The award honors Lynn?s and St. George?s George Mazareas, who is battling ALS.A $5 donation each day allows entrance to all gyms that day. Children under 12 are admitted free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Angel Fund, supporting ALS research.
