The 60th annual Harry Agganis basketball tournament continued Friday with three games, two of which featured out-of-state entrants.
In the boys? high school division, St. Nicks of New York defeated Roslindale, 73-53, behind big efforts fromTaso Plimakis (16 points) and Yanni Spanos (15). Leading the way for Roslindale was Peter Tsagaroulis, who finished with a team-high 15 points.
St. Vasilios of Peabody prevailed, 78-65, over a tournament newcomer Springfield/Fitchburg.
Brendan Morrison and Christian Teehan scored 18 points apiece to pace the victors while James Bourekas (24) and George Felgloy combined for 44 points in the loss.
In the evening?s finale, St. Sophia?s of Albany, N.Y., defeated St. George of Manchester, N.H., 58-51, in a rematch of last year?s title game.
Mike Ziamandinis (18 points) and George Marinopoulos (17) led the way for St. Sophia?s, while Elias Cacavas and Bobby Hanscom scored 18 each for St. George.
The presentation of the10th annual George K. Mazareas “MAZ” awards has been moved to Saturday night between 5 p.m and 6 p.m. John Koutsouflakis and John Niakaris will be the recipients.The award honors Lynn?s and St. George?s George Mazareas, who is battling ALS.
The tournament runs through Sunday, with the finals at Agganis Gym. Games also will be played at St. Mary?s Tony Conigliaro Gym and at the Fecteau-Leary School gym.A $5 donation each day allows entrance to all gyms that day. Children under 12 are admitted free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Angel Fund, supporting ALS research.
