School Roundup: English softball drops a heartbreaker

Matt Fraser

April 18, 2015 by Matt Fraser

In a game that featured five lead changes over nine innings, the Lynn English softball team (0-3) fell just short of its first win of the season in a 9-8 loss to Masconomet.
The Chieftains struck for three runs in their final trips against senior Shanna Zeramby, who went the distance, finishing with five strikeouts. The host Bulldogs would get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, before leaving the tying run on second base.
First-year coach Jack Bartlett noticed a much better effort from the Bulldogs in their third outing.
?There has definitely been steady improvement since our first game of the season,” he said.
?(Zeramby) did a good job against a good team and our infield turned two doubles plays behind her. There is still a lot of work to be done, but seeing our offense fight back in the ninth was certainly an encouraging sign.”
Lindsey Lannon finished with four runs batted in while Zeramby recorded two hits in the loss.
St. Mary?s 4, Spellman 0
Mia Nowicki spun the complete-game shutout for the host Spartans (3-0), striking out 12 and allowing three hits.
?She seemed to get stronger as she went, with seven of her strikeouts coming over the final three innings,” said St. Mary?s coach Colleen Newbury. “Her fastball was really popping today.”
Katerina Roy (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) and Katie Terban (1-for-3, RBI) highlighted the Spartans offense, which included two hits from Michaela Hamill.
Danvers 9, Acton-Boxborough 6
The Falcons improved to 2-1 behind strong offensive days from Caitlin McBride (3-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Brittany Dougal (3-for-3, RBI) as well as Madison Meucci (2-for-3, RBI), who went the distance with four strikeouts.
Malden 5, Beverly 4
The visitingPanthers (1-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but were unable to hold on against the Golden Tornadoes.
Ally Pia?s first inning double plated Hannah Silvestri before Pia and Ally Cabral (2-for-3, 2 runs) scored on a misplayed ground ball off the bat of Caitlyn Munzing.
BOYS? TENNIS
St. Mary?s 3, Austin Prep 2
The Spartans (5-0) continued on a roll with their first win over Austin Prep in 25 years.
?This was a big win for our team today,” said coach Brian Carlson. “We want the CCL title this year and our guys came in really determined today.”
In first singles, Brady Ryan rallied back after losing his first set to grab a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. Also in singles play, Patrick Morin-Plante won in third singles, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spartans also grabbed a win in doubles play from Noah Camelo and Conor Foley, who took their match, 6-4, 6-4.
Masconomet 4, Lynnfield 1
Senior captain Shreyus Kudrimoti won his first singles match, 6-2, 6-4, the lone bright spot for the Pioneers (0-4).
?I?m happy for Shreyus, he?s worked hard,” said coach Adam Milholland. “This clearly isn?t the start we were looking for, but hopefully we can get back on track.”
GIRLS? TENNIS
Swampscott 4, Marblehead 1
Swampscott kept its undefeated record going with a solid win at Marblehead. The Magicians? top two singles players were dealing with nagging injuries, and Swampscott (5-0) was able to take advantage.
Anna Raptunovich took the first singles match, 6-0, 6-0 and Vivien Gere took the second 6-0, 6-1. At third singles, Veronica Ptatigorskaya won, 6-2, 6-0.
Swampscott?s duo of Sara Cunningham and Juliette Albo also grabbed a close win in doubles play, winning 6-2, 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.

Marblehead (4-1-1) inched out a close win at home behind five points from Hadley Carlton (four goals, one assist). The Magicians also got solid play in goal from Brittany Lydon, who made 10 saves in the win.
