Tennis Roundup: Classical girls knock off English

Lynn Classical(6-0) remained undefeated on Tuesday after a solid 4-1 win over Lynn English. Anna Athanasopoulos (6-2, 6-2) and Meredith MacDonald (6-0, 2-6, 6-3) both grabbed wins in singles? play.
Classical also swept through doubles? play, with Shea Dunnigan and Briana Silva winning the first match 6-2, 6-3 and the duo of Zoe Raymond and Ashley Noel sweeping the second match 6-0, 6-0.
?I?m really happy with the consistency the girls have been playing with,” said Classical coach Cathy Ellis. “They?re excited to be playing so well, so we?re going to try to keep that going.”
GIRLS? TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Saugus 0
The Marblehead girls? tennis team (5-1) had no trouble on the road, sweeping Saugus, 5-0.
Megan Ryan got the win in first singles, 6-1, 6-0. Julia Channing swept through the second singles? match, 6-0, 6-0, and Lilly Frontero took the third singles match, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles? play, Meghan Hanratty and Hannah Cohen took the first match, 6-1, 6-0, while Lindsay Walker and Sammi Gilberg won the second match, 6-0, 6-4.
?Overall the girls played really well,” said Marblehead coach Catherine Castoldi. “They did a good job waiting for opportunities and grabbing points when they could.”
Andover 3, Swampscott 2
Swampscott (5-1) dropped its first match of the season, falling to defending state champion Andover. Despite the loss, Swampscott coach Nina Rogers was happy with her team?s effort.
?I?m incredibly proud of the girls,” Rogers said. “This was our best match of the season.”
Vivien Gere won the second singles match for Big Blue (6-4, 6-1). Veronica Pyatigorskaya won the third singles match (6-1, 6-3).
?This was a great experience to go out and play (Andover),” Rogers said. “We will only get better from it.”
Peabody 3, Gloucester 2
Peabody (4-4) swept the singles? matches for the win. Kayla Hodas won first singles while Eleni Petromelis won the second singles? match 2 and 0, and Tori Thompson won the third singles match 2 and 0.
Game 1: Cardinal Spellman 3, St. Mary?s 2
Game 2: Cardinal Spellman 4, St. Mary?s 1
The Spartans dropped a pair of matches to Cardinal Spellman on Tuesday. The first meeting between the two teams was cancelled earlier this year, so the teams decided to play a doubleheader
The Spartans got strong doubles? play from both their pairs. Julie Shea and Kristin Tansey played well in first doubles, while Adelina Katzounos and Kryssa Bertocchi played well in second doubles.
BOYS? TENNIS
Lynn Classical 3, Lynn English 2
Lynn Classical (3-4) just barely squeezed out a win in a competitive matchup with Lynn English. Classical grabbed two wins in singles? play, then sealed the match with a win in doubles.
Calvin Cheung won the first singles? match for the Rams (6-1, 6-2), while Moses Ba won the third singles? match (6-0, 6-2). The Rams? doubles win came from Alex Chea and David Hincapie (6-3, 6-2).
The Bulldogs? two wins came from Eddie Ayinla in second singles (6-0, 6-1) and the doubles pair of Johnson Nyordui and Andy Nguyen (7-5, 6-2).
St. John?s Prep 4, Marblehead 1
The Eagles (6-0) got two wins in singles? play and two wins in doubles? play. In singles, Mikey Prokopis won the second match (6-4, 7-5) and Evan Maguire won the third match (1 and 0). In doubles? play, Mateo Jacome and Nick Salacci won the first match (6-2, 6-0), and Andrew Cadigan and David Cunningham won the second match.
