Going over the numbers for a new Saugus High

SAUGUS – The Town of Saugus hopes to enter into the feasibility study for a new high school by October. However, said Town Manager Scott Crabtree, the process takes time and nothing has been solidified. And that includes any estimates on how much the project will cost, he said.?We?re not even close to being at that stage of determining how much it?ll cost,” Crabtree said Thursday. “Depending upon where the high school is built, the cost could be higher or lower. The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) decides what?s feasible. We have to look at what?s available for reimbursement programs.”The MSBA is the major funding source behind the plan to replace the building, which opened in September 1955.Crabtree said he doesn?t want to provide a chart and throw people off, thinking that?s the cost.School Committee member Arthur Grabowksi said a feasibility study needs to be in place before there can be an amount of money discussed.?It?s going to be expensive,” Grabowski said. “We?re talking multi-millions of dollars. I can?t put a specific dollar figure on it. There are so many variables to it.”Grabowski said the feasibility study will allow for a better idea of the cost once a site location is established. The MSBA building committee consists of various officials, including Crabtree, Grabowski, other School Committee members, high school representatives and Board of Selectmen members.Jeannie Meredith, School Committee vice chair, said the board will meet with the Finance Committee members May 13 to see if they?re approved for funding. It will also go before Town Meeting May 6 in a warrant article.?All of our future meetings dates will be held on the third Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m. at Town Hall,” Meredith said. “The feasibility study alone costs $1.85 million.”
