Outstanding pitching and solid defense helped push St. Mary?s past Austin Prep, as the Spartans won 2-1 in Reading on Friday.
Clay Yianacopoluswas lights out, allowing just two hits and an unearned run, striking out six and walking three in a complete-game victory.
St. Mary?s (7-4) got its offense working in the sixth, as Antonio Felix singled, Nick Costanza reached on a bunt single, and Brendan O?Neill was hit by a pitch. The Spartans got a run on a fielder?s choice, and with the bases still loaded, Ryan Borders delivered the go-ahead run, with an RBI single up the middle.
?We hadn?t quite clicked with the bats yet, but our pitching and defense has really been getting us by,” said Spartans coach Derek Dana.
Winthrop 9, Lynn English 2
It was not a good day for the Bulldogs, as Winthrop dominated.
?We had trouble in every facet today – hitting, pitching and defense,” said Bulldogs? (5-4) coach Joe Caponigro.
Lynn Classical 10, Gloucester 3
Brandon Devin (3-for-4, three runs, two RBIs) and Matt Lauria (4-for-4, three runs, two RBIs), Kyle Morrill (hit, two RBIs), Andrew Moccia (1-for-3, run, RBI) and Carlos Perez (1-for-2, run, RBI) led the Rams? offense.
Classical (7-2) scored five in the first and Matt Stanley pitched a complete game, giving up two runs with three strikeouts.
?It was a nice bounce back after losing to Swampscott,” Classical coach Mike Zukowski said. “We went about this game the right way mentally and scoring early gave us the confidence we needed.”
Swampscott 10, Revere 4
Senior starter Greg Collier tossed five solid innings for Swampscott (7-2). C. J. Howard pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Ryan January (1-for-2, walk, two stolen bases), Pat Bartholomew (1-for-1, RBI) and Collier (hit, two walks) paced the offense.
Beverly 12, Marblehead 5
The Panthers (6-3) grabbed four runs in the first and six in the fifth. Beverly?s Sean Hanlon and Luke Samperi each had a pair of RBIs. David Drinkwater went four innings for the win.
Arlington Catholic 7, Bishop Fenwick 0
Mike Campatelli had two of the Crusaders? three hits. The game was played under protest by Fenwick from the fourth inning on, and it was determined that the Crusaders won the protest, but they will not return to Arlington Catholic to play the remainder of the game.
Danvers 11, Salem 3
Andew Olszak got the win, allowing four hits and two runs, striking out six over five innings. Matt Andreas (3-for-4, two RBIs), and Olszak, Tim Unczur, Cris Valles and Devon Allen (two hits apiece) led the Danvers offense.
Peabody 12, Saugus 1
Ryan Collins (4-for-4, three RBIs), Matt Gonick (3-for-4, five RBIs,) and Danny Kohn (2-for-3, two RBIs) led the Peabody (10-0) offense and David Hoar got the win, going six innings, allowing seven hits with no earned runs and 10 strikeouts.Katie Morrison can be reached at [email protected].
