Outstanding pitching and solid defense helped push St. Mary?s past Austin Prep, as the Spartans won 2-1 in Reading on Friday.
Clay Yianacopoluswas lights out, allowing just two hits and an unearned run, striking out six and walking three in a complete-game victory.
St. Mary?s (7-4) got its offense working in the sixth, as Antonio Felix singled, Nick Costanza reached on a bunt single, and Brendan O?Neill was hit by a pitch. The Spartans got a run on a fielder?s choice, and with the bases still loaded, Ryan Borders delivered the go-ahead run, with an RBI single up the middle.
?We hadn?t quite clicked with the bats yet, but our pitching and defense has really been getting us by,” said Spartans coach Derek Dana.
Winthrop 9, Lynn English 2
It was not a good day for the Bulldogs, as Winthrop dominated.
?We had trouble in every facet today – hitting, pitching and defense,” said Bulldogs? (5-4) coach Joe Caponigro.

Classical (7-2) scored five in the first and Matt Stanley pitched a complete game, giving up two runs with three strikeouts.
?It was a nice bounce back after losing to Swampscott,” Classical coach Mike Zukowski said. “We went about this game the right way mentally and scoring early gave us the confidence we needed.”
Swampscott 10, Revere 4
Senior starter Greg Collier tossed five solid innings for Swampscott (7-2). C. J. Howard pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Ryan January (1-for-2, walk, two stolen bases), Pat Bartholomew (1-for-1, RBI) and Collier (hit, two walks) paced the offense.

Danvers 11, Salem 3
