In his four years as coach of the St. Mary?s boys? lacrosse team, Shawn Anderson hasn?t seen anything quite like the kind of effort the Spartans put forth in the first half of Friday evening?s 15-14 victory over Whittier Tech at Manning Field.
The Spartans (7-6) came out firing, scoring early and often to open up a 11-3 lead at the half and withstood a furious rally from the Wildcats over the final two periods.
?We came out of the gate working the ball extremely well. I?m talking textbook stuff,” said Anderson, whose team was most recently ranked 19th in the state in scoring.
?We?ve known all along we could score. It?s keeping the ball out of our net that?s been a problem for us and it almost cost us today with the second half being a much different story. The guys got a bit complacent but I?m proud of the way they battled.”
Despite all of the offense, St. Mary?s goaltender Brendon Donahue was the difference, with 10 saves.
Nick Amenta and Rich Cadigan scored four goals apiece to pace the Spartans, who also got two goals each from Dante Maribito and Anthony Delvecchio. Goals from Austin Frankel, Andrew Kramer and Jimmy Torosian completed the St. Mary?s scoring.
