Kelly-Ann Porcaro has been named the new Swampscott athletic director, superintendent of schools Pamela R. H. Angelakis announced in a statement.Porcaro has been the middle and high school AD for Manchester-Essex, where she is also a health/physical education teacher. “I am very excited to become part of the Big Blue,” Porcaro said in the statement. “I enjoyed meeting the students and staff during the interview process, and look forward to joining the Swampscott leadership team.””There were over a hundred applicants for this position,” Angelakis said in the statement. “The group of four finalists was a highly competitive and talented group of individuals who would bring many strengths to this position. In the end, it was Ms. Porcaro’s proven experience in building and strengthening athletic programs and years of experience in this position that positioned her ahead of the competition. We are excited to have her join our team.”Although Porcaro will officially begin her tenure in Swampscott on July 1, she will be leading the interview process for Swampscott’s next head football coach to replace Steve Dembowski, who resigned in March.Porcaro replaces Jon Flanagan, who announced his decision to step down in April. Flanagan, who had been the AD since 2011, decided not pursue the job as it was being turned into a full-time position in order to spend more time with his family and focus on his work as a teacher.”I put a lot of thought into it but in the end it wasn’t a hard decision,” Flanagan said at the time. “I’m excited about getting back into the classroom full time and to spend some quality time with my family.”In addition to her education certifications, Porcaro is also a certified athletic administrator with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Associations and a certified education instructor with the MIAA. She serves on the MIAA’s tennis committee and the education athletic committee.
