School Roundup: Classical girls’ track runs past Salem

The Lynn Classical girls? track team (2-3) came away with a big victory over Salem, 89-41. Agnes Bangura won the 100-meter dash and the 200, Devyn Astuccio took the triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles, and Anna Wargo won the 800 and the long jump. Soraya August qualified for the state tournament in the discus with a throw of 87 feet 5 inches.
The Classical boys, though, dropped a heartbreaker to the Witches, falling 66-65. Anto Stipanovic was a double winner in the shotput and discus, and Thomas Mackin took first in the 800-meter and 2-mile races. Zeke Ebieshuwa won the 200, and the 4×400-meter relay team consisting of John Ngunana, Julovens Colseville, Joquin Avila and Ahanna Ujorgi placed first. Jakeel Brown, Brian Arias and Samson Srey swept the javelin, and Stipanovic, Luis Bonilla, and Devin Crayton swept the shot put.
BOYS? LACROSSE
Austin Prep 19, St. Mary?s 5
It was a tough loss for the Spartans (7-7) as they relied on young, relatively inexperienced players to fortify their defense and midfield. Jimmy Torosian netted two goals in the loss. Dante Maribito, Nick Amenta and Andrew Kramer had one apiece. Spartans? coach Shawn Anderson said penalties were a big problem for his team on Monday.
?We can?t be playing a man down and be getting stupid penalties,” Anderson said.
Anderson said his team will focus on moving on from the loss, looking toward one of their ultimate goals, which is to make the tournament.
?It?d be a pretty special accomplishment,” Anderson said.
Salem 6, Lynn 3
Jonathan Benevides, Corey Wojewodzic and Tyler Craig all had goals for Lynn in the loss. Jack Stafford also contributed with an assist, and goalie Jesse Freeman played well.
?It was a good team effort,” said Shamrocks coach Peter Pappagianopoulos.
Revere 6, Winthrop 4
Ed Sullivan led the scoring for the Patriots (3-8) with four goals, while Dan Redding and Richie Damiano had one each. Revere?s really shined on Monday, with Nick Smith, Mike Dellorfano, Kevin Chiles and Julian Giraldo playing well. Goalie David Sinatra and defenseman Steve Noel also had big days for the Patriots.
?Our defense was unbelievably awesome today,” said Patriots? coach Steven Magno. “And now, we?re 2-0 in May. We?ve seen these teams once, and now we want to start knocking down some wins. We knew how to adjust (against Winthrop) and we came up big on offense and on defense.”
Peabody 7, Danvers 5
It was a team effort as the Tanners (8-6) topped the Falcons. Reed Foster had a goal and three assists. Tommy Southern had a pair of goals. Zach Bille netted two, and Cam Cordaro and Bobby Caproni had one each. Josh Fiore chipped in with an assist, and Frank Falco won 10 of 14 faceoffs. Pat McCarthy was big on defense for the Tanners.
Bishop Fenwick 14, Arlington Catholic 11
The Crusaders (7-5) got a great effort from goalie Dylan Miata (12 saves) as well as an offensive explosion from Mark Nalesnik (six goals, three assists) in their win over Arlington Catholic.
Aidan Moulton (three goals, three assists) and Chris Napolitano (two goals, three assists) were the other multiple-point scorers for Fenwick. Chris Carney, Chris Terry and Sam Mitchell each scored one goal.
GIRLS? LACROSSE
Marblehead 16, Pentucket 6
Marblehead (8-1-1, 5-0 NEC) got six goals from Hadley Carlton and Caroline Driscoll added five goals for the Magicians, while Lucie Poulin had two goals and four assists. Amanda Gregory, Ellie Ronan and Corrine Mayle each scored one goal for Marblehead.Swampscott 14, Gloucester 6
Ellie Wright, Priscilla Sullivan and Maggie DiGrande netted four goals each for Swampscott (6-6). The Big Blue?s Emma Sutherland added two goals, and Niamh Lang came through with one goal.
?We played very well, probably our best game of the season,” said Swampscott coach Ken Leeder. “We finished well and we defended well.”
