The Saugus softball team had everything working on Friday in a 6-0 shutout of Winthrop. “We finally came around with the bats,” said Saugus coach Jessica Lucier.
Pauline Ascolese had a big day from the leadoff position for the Sachems (5-6), going 3-for-4 and scoring three runs. Brooke Westmoreland also went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Katie Sheehan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Westmoreland got it done on the mound as well, pitching a complete game shutout. She scattered seven hits and walked just one.
?We struggled with the bats the last couple of games, and our goal was to create some offense,” said Lucier. “The girls really pulled through here at the end of the week, and we hope this will set us back on the right track.”
Revere 4, Beverly 0
Revere?s Sabrina Palermo shut down the Panthers offense, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning four.
?It was a tight game,” said Revere coach Joe Ciccarello. “(Palermo) didn?t blow everyone away, but she hit her spots and kept their big hitters off balance, and we played great defense.”
Offensively, Christina Stella had a couple of RBIs for the Patriots.
Ally Pia got the Panthers? hit, and her sister Jackie Pia performed well on the mound, but would take the loss.
?We put the ball all over the field, but couldn?t muster any other hits,” said Beverly coach Megan Sudak, whose team fell to 9-2.
Newburyport 4, Lynnfield 2
Both mental and physical mistakes were the difference for the Pioneers (10-3) in the loss.
?We made a bunch of mistakes, and they took advantage,” said Lynnfield coach Peter Marinelli. “The biggest thing was that we weren?t consistent. We didn?t play a solid game.”
It was a back-and-forth game for the first six innings, but Newburyport got two in the top of the seventh to break the 2-2 tie.
Olivia Keane went the full seven for the Pioneers, allowing three earned runs, walking six, and striking out five.
?We hit a lot of balls in the air, and that hurt us,” said Marinelli.
BASEBALL
Saugus 10, Madison Park 0
It was a family affair in Roxbury for the Sachems (5-8), as brothers Alex and Stephen Pettenati led Saugus to victory.
Senior right-hander Alex Pettenati went the full seven innings, allowing just two hits and fanning 11. Perhaps the most impressive part of his outing, according to Saugus coach Steve Freker, was the fact that he didn?t walk anyone.
?He was throwing strikes around the knees all day,” Freker said. “He really got into a groove and stuck with it.”
Pettenati has started three games for the Sachems, and earned the win in all of them.
His younger brother, Stephen, helped out with a huge day at the plate. Stephen drove in five runs, hitting a bases-clearing double in his first at-bat and a bases-loaded, two-run single in the fourth inning.
?It was the first time both of them started in the same game,” said Freker.
Senior Dan Cacciola drove in a pair of runs with three hits on the day, and Tyler Serino had a couple of hits as well.
