The St. Mary?s boys? lacrosse team kept its torrid scoring rate going on Saturday with a 17-0 victory over city rival Lynn Tech.
Senior captain Austin Frankel had a 10-point performance (seven goals) to pace the Spartans (8-8), who sit two wins shy of a berth in the Division 3 state tournament.
?None of my teams have won eight games in my tenure here, so this was a special feeling,” said fourth-year coach Shawn Anderson, who emptied the bench in the second half after St. Mary?s opened up a 12-0 lead after two periods.
?It was a great experience for the younger guys. I typically like to play my upperclassmen a lot more, but we have a lot of respect for (Lynn Tech) coach Jay Richards, who is in a tough situation in terms of his team?s (roster) numbers.”
Rich Cadigan tacked on four tallies for the Spartans, who got two goals apiece from fellow senior Jimmy Torosian (two assists), sophomore Joe Sylvestri and freshman Anthony Bono.
Brendan Donahue (two saves) and Bryce Marquise (five) combined for a rare shutout in net.
?All of these kids are in it together as one big family, so for everybody to get a chance to pitch in is great for this team,” said Anderson, who lauded the effort of eighth-grader Christian Wall.
Peabody 12, Fenwick 4
Matt Pino scored five goals and dished out two assists, leading the visiting Tanners (11-6) to their fifth consecutive Danish Cup victory as well as a berth in the Division 1 state tournament.
?It?s a very nice feeling being able to accomplish two of the goals we set at the beginning of the season on the same night,” said coach Anthony O?Donnell, whose team led, 5-2, at halftime.
Peabody was efficient in all areas, with Bobby Caproni, Josh Fiore (assist), and Reed Foster (four assists) scoring two goals apiece while Zach Billie added a solo tally.
The defensive tandem of Tim January and Pat McCarthy did an “unbelievable job” in front of goaltender Matt Cloutman, who made 12 saves in the win.
For the Crusaders (7-7), Chris Napolitano paced the offense with two tallies while Aidan Moulton and Mark Nalesnik added solo tallies. Dylan Miata made 12 saves to earn MVP honors along with Pino.
Beverly 14, Melrose 12
Sam Abate and Clinton Cabral scored three goals to go along with two assists apiece for the host Panthers, who prevailed in a back-and-forth affair.
Chris Vallette and Jordan Rawding also finished with three tallies for Beverly, which led, 5-1, after the first quarter before the Red Raiders stormed back with six straight goals to force a 7-7 tie by halftime.
Melrose would take an 11-10 lead after three periods before the Panthers put together a strong finish, aided by Jacob Lopez and Kevin Morency, who made three saves each.
Georgetown 5, Swampscott 3
The Big Blue got a strong performance from goaltender Ryan Dignan (12 saves), but still came out on the wrong end of a low-scoring contest with the host Royals. Swampscott (8-7) got one goal apiece from Jason Dignan, Andrew Dove, and Emory Wollerscheid.
GIRLS? LACROSSE
Billerica 14, Peabody 5
The Tanners were overpowered by the visiting Indians who Peabody coach Dennis Desroches believes to be “the most complete team” he?s seen this season.
