There might not be a pitcher in the Northeastern Conference who is in more of a groove right now than Peabody?s Shelbi Wilson. The senior struck out 12 and scattered three hits on Monday as the Tanners defeated Lynn English, 2-1.
?Shelbi has just been lights-out,” Peabody coach Butch Melanaphy said. “She?s carrying the team on her back right now.”
The Tanners (6-5) got a stiff challenge from the Bulldogs, thanks mainly to the pitching of Shanna Zeramby, who allowed no earned runs on four hits. But three Bulldogs errors over the first two innings allowed Peabody to take a 2-0 lead.
English (0-12) scored in the seventh when Sam Holey doubled and scored. But Wilson stranded the tying run on base to seal the win.
Gabby Koch had two of Peabody?s four hits, while Mallory LeBlanc and Dom DelBene had one each.
?We had chances all game and couldn?t get the runners in,” English coach Jack Bartlett said.Beverly 8, Lynn Classical 2
The Rams? (7-5) Emma DeJoie and Shannon Magner had two hits each, but some fielding mistakes proved costly as the Panthers (6-6) broke open a close game with six runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Maura Lanza?s one-out single in the top of the 10thscored Gabby Kenniston to give the Vikings (4-8) the lead for good. Lanza also picked up the win in relief of Taylor Thomas, going the final three innings with five strikeouts.
Swampscott (8-4) had a 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth when Ally Scarfo tripled to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. The Big Blue forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Marblehead 6, Gloucester 3
The Magicians (10-2) qualified for the state tournament with the victory but it came at a cost as Sam Treff suffered a broken tibia sliding into third base in the bottom of the third inning.
