Led by Lynn?s Ryan Beliveau, the Salem State baseball team is taking a shine to its first trip to the NCAA tournament in nearly a decade.
Beliveau?s five RBIs sparked the Vikings to a 10-1 win over top-seeded Southern Maine in the NCAA Division 3 New England Regional at Whitehouse Field in Harwich. Salem advances to play either Ramapo College or Curry College at 4:30 p.m. today for a spot in the regional finals.
Beliveau and the Vikings (27-13) wasted little time in jumping on the Huskies, as his bases-clearing double was a part of a four-run top of the first.
In the second, Salem kept on swinging. Richard Fecteau drove in two runs with a base hit and following a sacrifice fly, Beliveau smacked a two-run triple that made it 9-0.
Beliveau and Fecteau weren?t the only Vikings feasting on Southern Maine pitching. Andrew Deloury was 3-for-5 with a double and a run while Kevin Carens was 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases.
Fecteau drove home his third run of the game in the seventh when his infield single plated former Salem high star Teghan Malionek.Sophomore right-hander Mike Richardson was the beneficiary of the hit parade. He held the Huskies to five hits with four strikeouts in eight innings.
