School Roundup: Peabody scores big win over Malden Catholic

Led by David Hoar, the Peabody baseball team kept on rolling with a 6-0 victory over Malden Catholic in Malden on Thursday.
Hoar went the full seven innings and fanned 13 while allowing six hits and three walks. He struck out the last six batters he faced.
After striking out the side in the first inning, Hoar belted a three-run home run in the top of the second to get Peabody on top for good.
Matt Correale drove in a run for the Tanners with a triple, bringing the score to 5-0 in the fourth. Freshman Jake Gustin also drove in a run.
?I was happy with our effort against Salem earlier this week, and I hoped it would carry over to this game,” said Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt, whose team improved to13-3. “The way we jumped on this team early, the energy we had, the focus, the sense of urgency ? those were all things we?ve talked about, things that were missing at the beginning of the season.
?I feel like our team has been back these last two games, and we need to keep our focus and have good at-bats and get good pitching to put us in a good position for the important games at the end of the season.”Lynnfield 11, Rockport 3
The Pioneers had a great day in the field, turning a 4-3-6 triple play to escape a two-on, no out jam. Lynnfield was leading by four runs at the time.
?That play was huge,” said Lynnfield coach John O?Brien. “If that ball makes it through the infield, it?s a two-run game.”
Nick Colucchi earned the win for Lynnfield, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while throwing a complete game. Colucchi also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate.
Tom Anastasi drove in three runs and went 3-for-4. Spencer Balian and Nick Pascucci both went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Mike Stellato went 2-for-2, driving in a pair. Nick Theophiles and Justin Juliano both went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Saugus 5, Revere 1
Alex Pettenati threw a complete game for Saugus (6-10), allowing four hits and striking out nine. The run he allowed was unearned. Nick Rusconi had two hits and drove in two for the Sachems, and Dan Cacciola scored twice and drove in a run. Luke Serrette went 2-for-3, and freshman Mike Matee had two hits and an RBI.
Revere?s Maxx Anderson was “unbelievable” on the mound, according to Patriots? coach Sean Brinkley. He went the full seven, and only one of the runs he allowed was earned.
He started things off on a high note for Revere, logging a 1-2-3 inning using just six pitches in the first.
The Patriots (4-11) struggled at the plate, leaving too many runners on base. Jake DeAngelo had a good day offensively for Revere, Noah Jaynes lined a double down the left field line, and John DeSimone drove in the Patriots? only run with a single.
Everett 1, Marblehead 0
Garrett Keough had the only hit for Marblehead (7-8), breaking up a no-hitter with one out in the seventh.
Tom Rockett took the tough-luck loss for the Magicians, striking out three and allowing one run on four hits and two walks while throwing a complete game.
SOFTBALL
Saugus 16, English 2
The entire Saugus squad contributed offensively in the Sachems? five-inning win over English in Saugus.
Tayla Varney was the big hitter for the Sachems (6-8), going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Pitcher Brooke Westmoreland allowed one earned run on just two hits in four innings, and Shannon Gayron tossed a perfect fifth to close it out for Saugus.
?The win put us back on the right track,” said Saugus coach Jessica Lucier. “To come out and get these wins when we need them keeps us moving towards our season goals. I?m very proud that we got this boost after a couple of losses earlier in the week.”
Too many walks and hit batters hurt the Bulldogs. Coach Jack Bartlett hopes the team can put the loss behind them and keep making forward progress when it takes on Revere Monday.
Lynnfield 13, Ipswich 2
Annie Ham led the offense for Lynnfield (11-6) with a 3-for-4 day that included a three-run home run. She drove in four and scored three times.
