After giving away a six-run lead in the seventh inning, the St. Mary?s Spartans (11-5) benefited from some late heroics from senior Clay Yianacopolus and notched a 7-6 win over Haverhill in a non-league game Sunday night at Fraser Field.
With the game tied at 6, Donnie Weisse started the bottom of the seventh with a single. He advanced on a bunt by Antonio Felix before Yianacopolus drove him in with a single for the walk-off win.
The Spartans held a 6-0 lead with two outs in the seventh inning before everything unraveled.
?We just lost our concentration, bottom line,” said Spartans coach Derek Dana.
St. Mary?s made some errors in the field that led to unearned runs for the Hillies. Haverhill managed to claw all the way back to tie the game and chase St. Mary?s starter Brendan O?Neill from the mound. Matt Costanza came in to relieve him and got the final out of the seventh.
O?Neill notched two RBIs in addition to his 6-plus innings of shutout ball on the mound. Felix and Brady McLaughlin each had an RBI double, and Brent Lozzi notched two RBIs.
?It was an exciting win for sure,” Dana said. “It really shouldn?t have gotten to that point, but a win is a win.”
Swampscott 8, Bishop Fenwick 3
The Big Blue took advantage of six errors by the Crusaders (6-10) to score the easy victory.
Gavin Sullivan struck out eight and walked two in a complete game effort.
?Gavin just goes out there and battles,” Swampscott coach Jason Calichman said.
Swampscott (11-3) overcame deficits of 1-0 and 3-2, taking the lead for good thanks to a four-run bottom of the fourth inning. No. 9 batter Louis Olivieri?s two-run single broke a 3-3 tie and was a part of his three RBI day.
Greg Collier and Jake Venuti also drove in runs for the Big Blue. Fenwick got RBI singles from Jake Baressi and Mike Campatelli along with an RBI double from Cody Mullen.
St. John?s (Danvers) 9, St. John?s (Shrewsbury) 4
The Eagles (14-2) notched a non-league win behind strong pitching from Justin Foley, who improved to 7-0 on the mound. Foley went the distance, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out two.
Nick Latham got the Eagles started on offense with a home run in the first inning. Keith Leavitt knocked in two runs in the game, while Dan Rose and Dan Trulley had two hits each.
Eagles? coach Dan LeTarte was happy with the win, especially after losing to the Pioneers earlier this year, 3-1.
?It?s good to come back and get a win against these guys,” LeTarte said. “The guys wanted this one, and it was good for the seniors in their last home game.”
Lynnfield 12, Ipswich 3
The Pioneers got back on track with a win at Ipswich. Nick Aslanian went seven strong innings on the mound and the Lynnfield offense notched 12 hits at the plate.
Spencer Balian and Danny O?Leary each had three hits and three RBIs for the Pioneers (8-8).
?It was good to get back on track on the road like that,” said Lynnfield coach John O?Brien.
Arlington Catholic 8, Lynnfield 3
Lynnfield (8-9) had a rough day in the field Sunday against Arlington Catholic. Pitcher Nick Pascucci only gave up five hits, but the Pioneers gave up five unearned runs. They also couldn?t do anything with runners in scoring position, leaving several scoring opportunities out on the field.
?It was a tough one out there today,” said coach John O?Brien. “Arlington is a good team, I?m sure we?ll see them down the road if we can make the playoffs.”Mike Alongi can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @m_alongi.
