The Salem State baseball team?s quest for a New England regional title came to a sudden end on Saturday as MIT?s Phil Reiser belted a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Engineers a 2-1 win at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.
The Vikings (27-15) had beaten MIT in their opening game of the regional, but the Engineers rallied to win four straight in the loser?s bracket before falling in the finals to Ramapo College.
MIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Reiser doubled home Nate Rodman. The Vikings rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Richard Fecteau hammered the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence.
It stayed tied though the Vikings had several chances to push across the potential winning run. Salem had men on second and third in the seventh but failed to convert as reliever Mike Wymer got the final two outs.
The next inning, Teghan Malionek doubled but Wymer recorded a strikeout to diffuse the threat. MIT then had a chance to go ahead in the bottom of the eight, but Vikings reliever Rafael Tylus got out of a first-and-third jam.
Neither team threatened again until the top of the 12th, when Salem had two on with no outs but couldn?t convert. Reiser then wasted little time ending the drama when he belted Tylus? second pitch of the home half over the right field fence.Lynn?s Ryan Beliveau was selected as a member of the all-tournament team. In four games, the senior was 7-for-17 with seven RBIs. Fellow senior Kevin Carens was the other Viking chosen to the all-tournament team.
