Lacrosse Roundup: St. Mary’s girls see playoff hopes dashed in overtime

May 20, 2015 by Matthew Roy

Unfortunately, history didn?t repeat itself for the St. Mary?s girls on Tuesday at Manning Field. Needing to win their season finale for a second straight year in order to make the playoffs, the Spartans suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in overtime to Greater Lowell.
Last year the Spartans won their final game to get into the tournament.
?It?s really hard to swallow,” St. Mary?s coach Al Eaton said. “(Greater Lowell) did a nice job of stuffing the eight meter and preventing us from getting to the goal.”
The two teams had played a low-scoring game earlier this season, which the Spartans won. This one was much of the same as St. Mary?s (9-11) led 4-3 at the half.
The teams traded goals through the second half with the game tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation. The Gryphons scored early in the first of two three-minute overtime periods and held on despite several good chances for St. Mary?s in the final moments.
?We had a lot of good chances and just couldn?t get them in,” Eaton said.
Maggie Flaherty had four goals to lead the St. Mary?s offense. Sarah Ryan added two goals and Kaylin Deschenes, one.GIRLS

The Magicians bolted out to a 11-4 lead by halftime and cruised home from there as Caroline Driscoll?s seven goals paced the offense. Ellie Ronan added four goals and an assist with Hadley Carlton and Corinne Mayle having two goals each.
?Our offense was focused and determined,” Marblehead coach Annie Pugh said.
Lucie Poulin, Abby Settlemeyer and Chase Davies also had goals for the Magicians (11-4-1).
The Big Blue (7-11) got a hat trick from Maggie DiGrande and two goals from Ellie Wright.
Salem 14, Gloucester 8
The Witches moved into a tie for first in the Northeastern Conference/South standings with the Gloucester thanks to the victory. Senior Emily Coelho led the way as her seven-goal performance gave her 200 for her career.
?She really has been the staple of our team,” Salem (9-5) coach Jessica Trioli said.
Elizabeth Roush chipped in with four goals while Nicole Sadoway and Brianna Valido each had a goal. Sophomore Sydney Rocheville stonewalled Gloucester (4-13) with 21 saves.
?Gloucester is always tough. They?re the biggest competition we have in the league so it was nice to see us come out and play well,” Trioli said.

The Spartans dropped their third game in a row and were eliminated from playoff contention.
?It?s disappointing,” St. Mary?s coach Shawn Anderson said. “They mean well but we?ve been struggling.”
Nick Amenta had two goals and an assist for St. Mary?s, which also got two goals from Richard Cadigan. Austin Frankel had a goal and two assists, while James Torosian and Dante Maribito each had a goal and an assist.
Peabody 14, Salem 1Reed Foster had three goals and three assists to lead a dominant effort by the Tanners. Bobby Caproni added three goals and two assists while Josh Fiore and Matt Pino each had three for Peabody (13-7).
