Coming into this season, Marblehead softball coach Jon Gold didn?t know what to expect from a team that had no seniors on its roster. On Wednesday, the Magicians clinched the Northeastern Conference/South title with a 6-1 win over Swampscott.
The title is only the second in program history, along with 2007.
?It?s been a great year with a lot of young kids,” Gold said. “It?s been a surprise but we?ve had great team camaraderie.”
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when the Magicians (14-3) scored four times. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth with Swampscott scoring an unearned run in the seventh.
Madi Ernst struck out eight and had no walks in a complete game. Emily Trasher was 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Ashley Stiles added two hits and two RBIs. Sarah Bornstein had two hits and an RBI.
