Baseball Roundup: Top-ranked St. John’s flexes its muscles against Swampscott

May 21, 2015 by Matthew Roy

The Swampscott baseball team already had taken down one top-ranked team in Massachusetts ? Peabody ? this season. On Thursday, the Big Blue had a shot to do it again when they hosted St. John?s Prep.
Problem was that Eagles? ace Justin Foley was ready to go. The senior struck out 11 and held Swampscott to two hits over six innings en route to improving to 9-0 in a 10-0 Eagles win.
?Justin was pounding the zone,” St. John?s coach Dan LeTarte said.
The Eagles (17-2) gave Foley all the offense he needed in the first against Swampscott ace Gavin Sullivan when Keith Leavitt doubled and scored on Ted McNamara?s single.
St. John?s added two unearned runs in the second and blew the game open with six runs in the fourth. Jack Arend, Jacob Yish, and McNamara drove home runs before Ryan Spurr?s two-run double put the game out of reach at 9-0.
?Gavin competed, but we didn?t help him out,” Swampscott coach Jason Calichman said. “This team is resilient so I?m confident that we will bounce back against Danvers (on Wednesday).”Fenwick 8, Manchester Essex 0
The Crusaders got four innings of one hit ball with seven strikeouts from J.P. Reiling to keep Fenwick?s tournament hopes alive. Fenwick (7-11) must win its last four games to make the playoffs.
?We responded pretty well (Thursday),” Fenwick coach Kevin Canty said. “We put ourselves in this spot of needing to win, so we have to dig out of it.”
Fenwick took control early, scoring three runs in the first. The big hit was a two-run single by Rob Carillo.
Mike Campatelli was the other hitting star for Fenwick, belting two doubles and scoring a run.
Beverly 7, Wakefield 3
The Panthers (10-7) qualified for a 12th consecutive tournament berth and a 13th in 14 years under coach Dave Wilbur.
?I am very pleased with what this team has done,” Wilbur said.
Anthony Morrissey was brilliant on the mound, scattering five hits over six innings. Frank DeOrio led the Beverly offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Morrissey, Sean Hanlon, and Rocky Pisa also drove in runs.?(Wakefield) was a challenge for us and we were able to play well and get good pitching,” Wilbur said.
