A win is a win, and the Peabody softball team will take one however it can get one.
The Tanners eased their way to a 19-2 victory Friday at Triton, whose pitchers yielded 17 walks and five hit batsman.
?It was a bit unfortunate, really,” said Peabody coach Butch Melanaphy of the game, which lasted only five innings. “Our hitters didn?t get many chances to put the bat on the ball but credit them for taking advantage of (Triton?s) mistakes.”
Junior Paige Hayward (1-for-2, 3 RBIs) and senior Courtney Sabino (2-for-4, RBIs) led the Tanners? offensive attack.
Surprisingly, the Vikings actually matched the Tanners? output with six hits off starter Mallory LeBlanc (one walk).
?She carries the kind of mindset one needs to pitch at the varsity level,” said Melanaphy of the freshman, who will be leaned on heavily following the loss of senior ace Shelbi Wilson, who has been shut down for the year because oftendonitis.
Peabody (9-7 overall, 7-7 in the Northeastern Conference/Large) will meet Beverly in the first round of the Corning Tournament at Endicott College on Saturday at 9 a.m., with the winner taking on either Bishop Fenwick or Danvers in the title game at 3 p.m.
?We?ve had a lot of 1-1 showing the past few years, so we?re hoping for a nice change of pace,” said Melanaphy whose team hasn?t won the tournament since 2009. “We?re expecting a great game with Beverly, who has been firing on all cylinders after qualifying for the state tournament.”
