The Bishop Fenwick Crusaders kept their playoff hopes alive with a Geanoulis Tournament title this weekend in Peabody with a 5-2 win the in championship game against Everett.
It?s the first time the Crusaders (9-11) have won the tournament, and the timing couldn?t be better.
?Hopefully we can keep rolling and get these next two wins,” said Fenwick coach Kevin Canty, whose team needs to win its remaining two games to reach the playoffs.
Fenwick defeated Peabody, 4-1, in the first round behind pitcher Matt Haley, who was “outstanding,” said Canty.
?(Haley) showed great determination,” Canty said. “He?s a bulldog.”
Haley scattered seven hits and struck out nine in 6 ? innings. The Crusaders gave him some run support in the second as Cody Mullen singled and Brian Fitzpatrick doubled. Jake Baressi scored in the seventh on a suicide squeeze.
For Peabody, Dan Kohn went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Matt Correale drove in the first run of the tournament with an RBI single.
?Haley just pitched a great game against us,” said Tanners coach Mark Bettencourt.
In the final round, Fenwick?s Rob Carillo pitched a gem, throwing a complete game two-hitter and earning the tournament?s MVP honors. Mike Campatelli and Carillo each had RBIs in the championship game, and Matt Townsend and R.J. Libby reached base a combined five times.
In the consolation game, the Tanners (15-5) allowed 11 runs in the first inning to Andover and fell 15-5. Correale, Ryan Collins and Nick Palma each had three hits.
