The Spartans gave up some late runs to league rival Austin Prep, losing 7-3 on Tuesday at Fraser Field.
Austin Prep jumped out to an early lead, scoring one in the first. St. Mary?s scored all of its runs in the bottom of the second. Brent Lozzi doubled, John Gaeta singled, and a double steal scored the first Spartans? run. Don Weisse hit an RBI single and Matt Costanza came through with a run-scoring double.
Clay Yianacopolus went 5 ? innings for St. Mary?s, allowing five hits and four earned runs, walking five and striking out five. Yianacopolus got into a jam in the sixth, allowing three runs and leaving with two out and two on. Antonio Felix relieved the starter and got out of the jam, but allowed three runs in the seventh.
St. Mary?s threatened in the last of the seventh, loading the bases, but couldn?t push across another run.
?We?ve been playing such good baseball and have been able to finish games, but today we couldn?t,” said Spartans coach Derek Dana. “I was glad to see that the guys didn?t give up and kept the pressure on them.”
The Spartans head into their final regular season game with a record of 8-4 in the Catholic Central League, 14-8 overall.
Danvers 6, Bishop Fenwick 4
The Crusaders? playoff hopes were dashed on Tuesday as they fell to Danvers at home.
?You could tell we were just emotionally and physically drained from the last couple games,” said Fenwick coach Kevin Canty.
The Crusaders (9-12) got down early, allowing three runs over the first two innings. It wasn?t until the sixth that they generated some offense.
Cody Mullen, Matt Renzulli and Jake Barressi all had RBIs for Fenwick.
Beverly 18, Revere 1, 5 innings
The Panthers topped the Patriots in five innings as they unleashed an offensive attack on Revere.
David Drinkwater was the winner for Beverly, going five innings and allowing just two hits. Ted Leathersich went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Anthony Morrissey drove in five with a 3-for-3 day, and Ricky Johnson went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
