The Swampscott boys notched a crucial win in their late-season playoff push, beating Lynn English, 4-1. With the win, Swampscott (8-7) needs just one more win in its last two games to make it to the state tournament.
Big Blue was led by MIAA Division 3 North singles? champion Matt Jacobs, who took his match, 6-0, 6-2. Ian Crimmins followed with a win in second singles, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles? play, Sam Mayblyum and Ben Ringler took the first match, 6-1, 6-2. The team of Tyler Gateman and Ray Rosa took the second match, 6-3, 6-2.
English fell to 3-11.
BOYS? TENNIS
Manchester-Essex 3, St. John?s Prep 2
St. John?s came up just short in a tough match against an undefeated Manchester-Essex team. The Eagles (12-5) got a singles? win from Mikey Prokopis, who won the third match, 7-5, 6-2. The team of Andrew Cadigan and Nick Salacci won the second doubles? match, 6-0, 6-4.
?We?re a young team,” said Eagles coach Mark Metropolis. “This match gave us some good experience. Hopefully after we play BC High (in our next match), we?ll really be ready for the tournament.”
Marblehead vs. Gloucester
The Marblehead boys? tennis team won by forfeit because Gloucester could not field enough players. The Magicians are now 13-4.
GIRLS? TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0
Marblehead moved one step closer to the Northeastern Conference title with a win over Gloucester. It was a clean sweep in singles? play, with Kelly Mealey, Megan Ryan and Julia Channing each winning their respective matches, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles? play, Hannah Cohen and Meagan Hanratty took the first match, 6-1, 6-1. The team of Sammi Gilberg and Lily Frontero won the second match, 6-3, 6-1.
The Magicians (15-3, 14-1 NEC) need one more win to tie Swampscott for the NEC title.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Cardinal Spellman 2
The Crusaders only got one singles? win, but they swept the doubles? matches en route to the win. Tara LaCross notched the lone singles? win, taking the third match, 8-1.
Fenwick (12-3) got doubles? wins from the team of Megan McGunigle and Olivia Comeau (8-2) and the team of Alessa Padilla and Hannah Kline (8-2).
?At this point in the year, we?re really prepping for the playoffs,” said Fenwick coach Paula Hannon. “Manchester-Essex should be a great test for us going into the tournament.”
