LYNN – A brush fire that plagued residents of Ward 1 over the holiday weekend is still smouldering, according to District Fire Chief Jack Barry.Residents in the Lynnfield Street vicinity could see and smell smoke from the fire, especially in the wooded area beneath the power lines, said District Chief Steve Archer.?We?re still monitoring the situation in the woods along with the State Forestry,” Archer said. “The brush fire occurred Sunday into Monday in the woods, in an area we call ?The Overlook.??We had trouble gaining access to the area,” he said. “Most of the fire was burnt out.”By Monday, Barry said, it was clear the fire had nowhere else to go.However, said Barry, “We received initial calls Saturday around 5 p.m. Areas are still smouldering now.”Meanwhile, in West Peabody, a brush fire occurred early in the morning at 5 a.m. Saturday and again Sunday at 2 a.m., Deputy Chief Richard Nelson said. “Usually there is an ignition source, but it is undetermined at this time.”Nelson said three small fires in the last 10 days were ignited by cigarettes. However, the brush fire could have started as a result of dry conditions. The task was a small assignment for the department.?It was a small area, and we wet it down,” Nelson said. “We don?t consider it anything significant.”
