LYNN – A hit-and-run victim remained in serious condition Tuesday after being injured the previous evening in a moped accident on Union Street in which the scooter burst into flames upon impact.Deontay Smith, 26, of Lynn, was badly injured and med-flighted to Boston after the accident, which happened at 9:03 Monday night.Police said Smith sustained third-degree burns along with a broken tibia and fibula. He is under sedation at Brigham and Women?s Hospital, police said.Police are still searching for the car and its driver.?It was dark, but I could see a cruiser in the middle of the street, as I passed Caruso?s,” said Krystle Rabideau, who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident. “As I got closer to Family Dollar and Walgreens, I saw that there was yellow tape, blocking the street, and as I took the right turn after Family Dollar to go around the accident, I slowed down, and I could see the wheels and other pieces a few feet away from the yellow tape.”According to District Fire Chief Steve Archer, Smith was conscious while responders worked on him.Archer said Smith was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital, and was subsequently med-flighted to Boston.Smith?s condition is “currently serious,” said Lori Schroth, a Brigham and Women?s spokeswoman. “He is unable to receive visits from anyone other than immediate family.”Rabideau said the crash left her shaken.?Just seeing the smashed-up bike made me nervous, because everyone in my neighborhood rides those little bikes and scooters, so when I came back out onto Union Street from the side street across La Fe, I asked the officers if he made it out alive, and they said, ?as of now,? which obviously meant it was critical, and my heart just sank.”
