School Roundup: Lynnfield boys’ lacrosse keeps rolling

The Lynnfield boys? lacrosse team is heading into the Division 3 North tournament on about as good a run as coach Joe Papagni could have hoped. The Pioneers dispatched Mystic Valley, 19-8, Thursday at Pioneer Stadium to win for the 11th time in a row.
?We are playing well in all facets right now,” Papagni said. “Our scoring touch has picked up and we?re playing well defensively. It?s a great time to be peaking.”
Since losing to Belmont, 10-7, on April 24, the Pioneers (14-5) have outscored the opposition, 116-52, during their 11-game win streak.
?(The guys) kind of figured it out,” Papagni said. “We went through a bit of a tough streak early but our senior leadership took over and everything fell into place.”
Lynnfield dominated most of the way against a Mystic Valley team that sported a 15-2 record entering the game. Pat Garrity was the offensive spark plug, finishing with five goals and four assists while Chad Martin netted six goals.
Jon Knee had a goal and six assists with Jake Forgione firing home a hat trick and adding an assist. Alex Soden had two goals with Nick Kinnon and Jesse Balway also scoring.
?We?ve got some good captains and a lot of really bright kids. That helps,” Papagni said.
GIRLS? LACROSSE
Bishop Fenwick 14, Cardinal Spellman 7
Merry Harrington?s six goals and three assists led the offensive attack as the Crusaders closed the regular season in strong fashion. Harrington finished the year with a remarkable 108 goals and 19 assists.
Tori Hernandez and Molly Camelo added two goals and two assists with Ellen Fantozzi also notching a pair of tallies. Hannah Durkin and Colleen Corcoran netted single goals.
?This is a fun time of year. Hopefully, we can keep it going in the tournament,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 6, Gloucester 2
The Magicians won for the third time in four days as they clinched a spot in the upcoming Division 2 North tournament in their finale. It?s Marblehead?s first postseason appearance since 2012.
Marblehead (10-10) used a five-run bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Garrett Keough had the big blow with a two-run single. Tim Kalinowski and Spencer Carr also drove in runs in the rally.
Tommy Rockett went 6 1/3 innings, scattering four hits and two earned runs to pick up the victory. Ted Camp got the final two outs for the save.
SOFTBALL
Everett 10, Swampscott 0
Crimson Tide ace Sydnee Bessler hurled a perfect game, striking out 12, as the Big Blue dropped their season finale.
?We knew coming in how good Bessler was and she showed it,” Swampscott coach Frank Kowalski said.
The Big Blue finish 13-9 and await their seeding in the Division 2 North tournament.
Marblehead 7, Gloucester 2
The Northeastern Conference/South champions completed one of their best regular seasons ever as Madi Ernst scattered eight hits in a complete game.
Montana Joyce was 2-for-2 with a RBI and sister MacKenzie was 2-for-4. Allie Kapoll was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Emily Promise had a double and a RBI. Sarah Bornstein drove in two runs.
?I am so proud of these girls,” Marblehead coach Johnny Gold said. “They?ve played really well. It?s been a great year for us.”
Saugus 12, Pope John 0 (5 innings)
The Sachems cruised on senior day as Shannon Gayron struck out 10 and allowed one hit. She also had two hits at the plate.Jillian Cooper was 3-for-3 with two runs while Tayla Varney was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Katie Sheehan had a three-run homer and Jessica Allen added two hits and an RBI.
