LYNN – The defendant in the Market Street Eastern Bank robbery on May 20 agreed to be held without bail Thursday during a dangerousness hearing at Lynn District Court.Steven J. Durbano, 42, of 200 Lewis Street, Apt. 1, later prompted a nearly two-hour standoff with police. Police said he walked into the bank and told teller Franshelix Martinez, 23, of Lynn he had a bomb in a bag he was holding. He has been charged with armed robbery; disorderly conduct; resisting arrest; intimidating to steal from depository; and a common and notorious thief. He allegedly stole $1,590 during the robbery, police said.Durbano?s case remains in district court, said Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.?He and his attorney agreed to be held without bail,” Kimball Monahan said. “Right now, he remains in district, but a determination will be made whether to pursue it to Superior Court. He is deemed to be dangerous.”Lynn Police Lt. Tom Reddy also said Durbano has an extensive criminal record, containing many crimes of violence and has served numerous terms of incarceration.?He has many convictions for weapons and assault and battery and assault and battery with dangerous weapon charges,” Reddy said. “He has several robbery convictions, at least one of which was a bank.”According to Reddy, the initial chase was extensive before police convinced him to surrender himself.?Durbano was followed while additional officers were requested to stop and identify him,” Reddy said. “Officers attempted to stop him out front, he ran from them. He went back into (his apartment) and locked himself inside. At this point, the property was secured. An attempt was made to communicate with the suspect through the door to no avail.”Police shut down Lewis Street and called in the State Police bomb squad and SWAT team in case police needed to storm Durbano?s apartment, Lt. Rick Donnelly said. Other residents of the apartment building were evacuated, and the nearby Brickett Elementary School locked its doors and wouldn?t allow anybody to come in nor leave. Classes remained on schedule, however, Donnelly said.A probable cause hearing will be held June 25.
