Swampscott High hires new varsity football coach

May 29, 2015 by Mike Alongi

The Swampscott High School Athletic Department introduced Robert Serino as the new varsity football coach on Friday. Serino had been an assistant coach with the Big Blue since 2007, and he was the Northeastern Conference Assistant coach of the Year in 2009 under head coach Steve Dembowski. Before coaching at the high school, Serino was a head coach in the Swampscott Pop Warner program from 1999 to 2006.
Serino is a Swampscott High graduate and former football player from the class of 1984.
Having been an assistant at Swampscott for eight years, he is very familiar with the system and the student-athletes he will be coaching. Dembowski, who resigned from the head coaching position earlier this year to take a job closer to his family, had nothing but positive comments regarding Serino.
?He will maintain all the traditions of the program,” he said. “The players really respect him.”
Swampscott High incoming Athletic Director Kelly Porcaro and principal Ed Rozmiarek led a committee of coaches, current and former players and community members in reaching the decision to hire Serino.
The Big Blue finished the 2014 football season with a 4-7 record, including a loss to Lynnfield in the Division 4 North semifinals. Serino will be taking over a team who graduated 20 starters this year, including quarterback Devin Conroy.Mike Alongi can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @m_alongi.
