School Roundup: Newburyport eliminates Swampscott boys’ lacrosse

The season ended for the Swampscott boys? lacrosse team with an 18-6 loss to Newburyport in the first round of the Division 3 North playoffs on Monday. The game didn?t go as planned but Big Blue (9-12) coach Todd Pierce is proud of his team?s performance as No. 11 Swampscott faced the No. 6 seed.
?It was a tough draw. Newburyport is a very good team,” he said.
Pierce commended the way his team played hard to the finish, despite the score. Ryan Dignan had 13 saves while Devin Conroy had three goals and Sebastian Camelo, Ian Hamilton and Jason Dignan each had one goal.
Boys? Lacrosse
Lynnfield 18, Saugus 2
The No. 5 Pioneers cruised to victory against the No. 12 Sachems in their first-round Division 2 North game. It was the first-ever playoff win for Lynnfield. Jack Gentar had 14 saves in net for the Pioneers (15-5). Saugus (9-9), which had trouble finding its rhythm in the torrential down pour, was led by goals from Joe Cucuzza and Joe Russo.
Bishop Fenwick 20, Essex Tech 7
The Crusaders advanced after beating the Hawks. No. 10 Essex Tech got the first goal but No. 7 Fenwick attacked with 13 unanswered goals in their Division 2 North first-round match.
?They played unbelievable,” Fenwick (11-8) coach Ralph Ruocco said of his team.
The Crusaders were led by Chris Napolitano, who had seven goals and three assists, Mark Nalesnik (six goals), Aidan Moulton (four goals, four assists), Jake Mitchell, Dan Hannon and Sam Mitchell (one goal each). Goalies Dylan Maida and Deven Fiandaca combined for eight saves.
The Hawks finish with a record of 12-9.
Girls? Lacrosse
Masconomet 16, Peabody 9
With the loss to No. 3 Masco in their Division 1 North match, No. 14 Peabody?s season ended. Sarah Napolitano led the Tanners (8-9) with three goals. Adriana Raneri had two goals and Sarah Godschall, Lauren Wolff and Amanda Bradley each had one goal.
Beverly 14, Medford 4
The No. 5 Panthers pounced on the No. 12 Mustangs in their Division 1 first-round game. “Everyone really stepped up on defense,” said Beverly (15-4) coach Alyson Healey. Meghan Henrichon and Grace Otterbein each had four goals, while Megan Gavin, Marita Smallman, Alicia Cecchini, Maeve Blake and Callie Donovan each had one goal.
Triton 15, Gloucester 8
No. 13 Gloucester bowed out after a loss to No. 4 Triton in its Division 2 North match. Gloucester (5-13) let Triton (13-8) get ahead in the first half but turned it up in the second half. Midfield defense put in a great effort along with the passing on offense.
Bishop Fenwick 21, Tewksbury 7
No. 3 Fenwick played with patience in its Division 2 first-round game against No. 14 Tewksbury. Fenwick (14-5) coach Karen Guillemette was pleased with the way her team played and the game overall.
?We came out strong and never looked back,” Guillemette said.
Tori Hernandez had five goals and three assists to lead the Crusaders while Colleen Corcoran four goals and five assists, Merry Harrington four goals and an assist, and Alex Butler added two goals. Tegan Ahern, Hannah Durkin, Molly Camelo, Lexie Rose, Maddie Bethune and Lauren Coccoluto each added a goal.
Girls? Golf
The North/Central/West girls? sectional tournament at Holden Hills was postponed to Thursday.
Boys? Tennis
The regular-season match between Masconomet and Marblehead was cancelled and will not be made up. For tournament purposes, the teams finish with their current records. Marblehead has a record of 17-4.Mercedes Slawter can be reached at [email protected].
