He is enthusiastic and energized to both support and stimulate our vision for the Lynn public schools,” Latham said in a statement announcing Tutwiler?s appointment.?Dr. Tutwiler has worked in urban and suburban school districts and been equally successful,” Latham said. “I am confident his energy and enthusiasm will serve Lynn students, teachers and parents well.”Tutwiler replaces Deputy Superintendent Susan Rowe, who is scheduled to retire on June 30.Latham announced Rowe?s retirement Feb. 12 and School Committee members voted to advertise the deputy?s job on Feb. 26.Rowe?s public school background includes school support and curriculum work. As deputy, she worked alongside fellow Deputy Superintendent Jaye Warry.?She will be sorely missed,” Latham said.Latham cited Tutwiler?s experience working with community and educational organizations and praised him as “a strong proponent for inclusion at all levels and for all students.”Tutwiler was previously Wayland High School?s principal, dean of students at Westford Academy and assistant headmaster at Boston?s English High School. His career began at Brighton High where he taught world and U.S. history. He started his career as a history teacher at Brighton High in 2000. He went on to serve as assistant headmaster at Boston English, dean of students at Westford Academy and principal of Wayland High School for six years. He took over as headmaster at Brighton in 2013.?I came back to Brighton because I have intense interest working in an urban district,” Tutwiler said. “What attracted me to Lynn is that it seems like a tight-knit community. I?m intrigued by the challenge.”Tutwiler was somewhat familiar with Lynn schools through a friendship with Breed Middle School vice principal Michael Zimirowski, also a Holy Cross graduate.?I see Lynn as a school district engaged in a valiant effort to meet the needs of kids in an urban context,” Tutwiler said. “It?s something I want to be a part of.”Tutwiler was born in Chicago and grew up in Champaign, Ill. He lived in Texas for five years while his mother earned a doctorate at the University of Texas, and spent his high school years in St. Paul, Minn. He played basketball all four years at Holy Cross.Committee members Rick Starbard and Donna Coppola said they are enthusiastic about Tutwiler?s hiring.?He will be a great deputy to replace a great outgoing deputy. I am excited to have him on board,” Coppola said.Tutwiler holds a bachelor?s degree in history from The College of the Holy Cross, a master?s degree in education from Harvard University, and he has a doctorate of philosophy in curriculum and instruction from Boston College?s Lynch School of Education.Experience as an urban educator is one of the hiring qualifications listed in the deputy superintendent posting and Starbard said he thinks Lynn schools will benefit from having an educator from another community helping to oversee local education.?Not to slam hiring from within, but it?s a good move – you get someone with a different perspective,” he said.Committee members last Thursday voted to set a prospective salary range of $140,000 to $145,000 for the deputy?s salary and authorized Latham to negotiate a salary with her choice for deputy.
