Swampscott advanced to the second round of the Division 3 North tournament after a nail-biting 3-2 win over Watertown Thursday in Swampscott.
Anna Raptunovich took the first singles? match, 6-1, 6-1, and Vivien Gere won the second, 6-1, 6-0. The Big Blue then dropped its next two matches, leaving its tourney fate in the hands of senior Sara Cunningham and freshman Anna Cilley in doubles.
The duo battled through a 2 ?-hour, three-set match that ended up going to a tiebreaker. Cunningham and Cilley stayed poised and came out with a win, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), to push the Big Blue (17-4) on to the next round.
?It was a really good win,” said Swampscott coach Nina Rogers. “With Sara?s experience and preparation, she really took over in the tiebreaker.”
Division 1 North
Masconomet 5, Lynn Classical 0
The second-seeded Rams were ousted by No. 15 Masconomet in the first round, ending their season with a 16-3 record.
?I?m very proud of the team,” said Classical coach Cathy Ellis. “They battled right to the end against a much more experienced team.”
Division 2 North
Marblehead 5, Hamilton-Wenham 0
Marblehead (18-3) kept it going with a shutout of Hamilton-Wenham in the first round. Kelly Mealey (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) and Julia Channing (0-6, 6-2, 6-0) were both taken to three sets, but still came out on top for the Magicians. Lily Frontero took third singles, 7-5, 6-2.
Hannah Cohen and Meagan Hanratty won the first doubles? match, 6-2, 6-2. Sammi Gilberg and Lindsay Walker rallied to win second doubles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Wayland 4, Danvers 1
Danvers? season came to an end with a first-round loss to Wayland. The lone winner was senior Kelly McCarthy in third singles, 6-1, 6-1.
After starting the season 0-3, the Falcons (11-10) won 11 of their final 17 regular-season matches to earn a spot in the tournament.
It?s been a fantastic season overall,” said Danvers coach Dee Chamberlain. “We started off slow, but the girls got it and played great. I?m very proud, and next year is another year.”
Division 3 North
Arlington Catholic 3, Bishop Fenwick 2
The Crusaders swept doubles in a first-round match with Arlington Catholic, but it wasn?t enough to get a win. Megan McGunigle and Olivia Comeau won first doubles, 6-3, 6-2, and Alessa Padilla and Hannah Kline won second, 6-3, 6-0.
