The Marblehead girls? lacrosse team had a bye in the opening round of the Division 2 North tournament, so they had to wait until Thursday to begin their postseason journey.
The wait proved worth it for coach Annie Pugh?s team as Ellie Ronan netted four goals and Corinne Mayle added a hat trick to lead the second-seeded Magicians into the sectional semis following a 14-6 win over Pentucket at Piper Field.
Marblehead (14-4-1) will face either No. 3 Bishop Fenwick or No. 6 Ipswich on Tuesday in the semifinal round.
?I am very proud of our performance (Thursday),” Marblehead coach Annie Pugh said. “We came to play and came to win. It was a great day for Marblehead girls? lacrosse.”
The Magicians very in control right from the opening draw as they scored the first seven goals in bolting to an 8-2 lead by halftime. Pentucket would get no closer than five in the second half.
Hadley Carlton and Caroline Driscoll netted two goals each with Amanda Gregory adding a goal and an assist. Brittany Lydon made seven saves in goal for the Magicians.
In other girls? action, Beverly was unable to overcome an early deficit as Andover cruised to a 14-4 win in a Division 1 North quarterfinal.

Division 2 North
Marblehead 12, Burlington 7
The Magicians got a push from one of the Middlesex League?s top programs, but four goals and an assist each from Andrew McGurrin and Manning Sears helped Marblehead advance to the semifinals.
?We had a lot of guys that really stepped up,” Marblehead coach John Wilkens said.
Brooks Tyrrell had two goals and an assist and Sam Paquette netted a pair. Harry Craig and Andy Clough dished out two assists.
Goalie Nathan Maselek was outstanding in turning aside 22 shots, many of them in the second half when the Red Devils were trying to rally.
Third-seeded Marblehead (14-6) plays the winner of Friday?s Wakefield/Shawsheen game in the semifinals next Thursday.
Division 2 North
Beverly 10, Melrose 8
The top-seeded Panthers defeated the Red Raiders for the second time this season to book a ticket into the semifinals on Tuesday.
Chris Villette led the way offensively with four goals and an assist. Sam Abate added a hat trick and an assist while Jordan Rawding had two goals.
Beverly (16-6) faces Malden Catholic at home in the semifinals in another rematch from the regular season, taken by the Lancers in overtime.

Division 3 North
Winthrop 9, Notre Dame (Tyngsboro) 4
The Vikings marched through their preliminary round game thanks to the pitching tandem of Taylor Thomas and Maura Lanza and an offense that pounded out 16 hits.
Maddie Finga?a, Christine Haskell, and Thomas all had three hits. Thomas added two RBIs and Thomas had one.Thomas recorded nine strikeouts for Winthrop (9-10) in five innings with Lanza whiffing four in two innings of relief.
