School Roundup: Lynnfield girls’ tennis back in North final

The Lynnfield girls? tennis team is on its way to the Division 3 North finals after sweeping Manchester-Essex, 5-0, in the semifinals on Monday. First single Sarah Mezini won both sets 6-1, 6-4. No. 2 single Kelley Nevils won 6-1, 6-2, and third single Izzy Figucia won 6-1, 6-1. At first doubles, Katie Nevils and Olivia Skelley took both sets 6-4, 6-2, while second doubles Katie Nugent and Camie Foley won, 6-3, 7-6.
During the regular season Manchester-Essex gave Lynnfield (19-0) a run for its money. So, the Pioneers, the defending Division 3 champs knew they had to come to this match ready to play. The last match Lynnfield lost was June 6, 2013. The Pioneers will face either Austin Prep or North Reading in the division final on Friday.

Ipswich 9, Lynnfield 8
Despite a big early lead, Lynnfield just couldn?t seal the deal at the end of its Division 3 North semifinal game on Monday. Lynnfield went up 6-1 with quick goals at the start, which triggered Ipswich to get in gear. Going into the second half, Lynnfield (16-6) led by just one goal, 7-6, but lost its momentum.
Goalie Jack Ganter “played great” said coach Joe Papagni. Chad Martin had three goals. Johnny Knee had three goals and two assists. Jake Forgione had a goal and an assist. Dan Sullivan had a goal, and Pat Garrity had five assists.
Softball
Winthrop 13, Mt. Alvernia 1
Winthrop pummeled Mt. Alvernia in their Division 3 North semifinal match. Taylor Thomas was strong at the mound for Winthrop (11-10) with 13 strikeouts, two walks and two hits. Catcher GabbyKennistonstayed calm and in control for the game, and ReginaGuarfo, Maddie Fianga?a, and Nicole Pucillo were solid on offence.
