The Marblehead girls? lacrosse team had scored goals seemingly at will this season. On Tuesday in the Division 2 North semifinals at Piper Field, the Magicians? hopes of back-to-back trips to the sectional final came to an end as Ipswich took a 12-8 victory thanks to a staunch defense.
?We left it all out on the field and played a great game,” Marblehead coach Annie Pugh said. “The results were obviously not the way we wanted them to end up but we played extremely well. Ipswich was an outstanding team.”
The No. 2 Magicians (14-5-1) had to play catch-up practically from the opening draw. The No. 6 Tigers (12-5) bolted out of the gates fast, leading 3-1 early, before Marblehead steadied itself and cut the lead to 6-5 at halftime.
Marblehead came out flying to start the second half and took its first lead at 8-7 midway through. The Tigers, however, turned up the defense as Marblehead never scored again.
It wasn?t for a lack of chances, though, as Ipswich goalie Eliza Starile stopped five Magician shots in the closing four minutes.
Caroline Driscoll had a hat trick to lead Marblehead?s offense. Amanda Gregory and Hadley Carlton added two goals each and Corinne Mayle scored a goal.?I was proud to coach this team. Our time will come because our girls want it and are willing to put in what it takes to win,” Pugh said.
