Nahant trash picks up under Waste Management

Tara Vocino

June 10, 2015 by Tara Vocino

NAHANT – Town Manager Jeffrey Chelgren said trash pickup has dramatically improved since this weekend since Waste Management was awarded a five-year contract.Northside Carting, the previous waste disposal company for approximately 10 years, was let go over the weekend due to inconsistent service and resident complaints, Chelgren said.?The last three weekends they were going into Saturday and Sunday, but the contract requires that it is done in one day – by the end of the day on Friday,” Chelgren said. “We allow some flexibility, but consistent, one-day service was not happening. They were also missing certain segments of town.”Chelgren said discrepancies arose last winter and became more evident in the last few weeks. He said Town Hall offices were inundated with calls from residents whose trash wasn?t picked up on time. As a result, he said, he decided to bring Waste Management back.Resident Dennis Maroney said Waste Management collected on schedule Friday morning.?Life is back to normal now,” Maroney said. “Residents had to either leave the trash out front, or remove it and bring it out again Saturday morning.”Chelgren said Nahant isn?t a town where the streets change over the years, and Nahant is an easier community for that reason.?They already have familiarity with the streets, so that makes it easier for everyone,” Chelgren said.Waste Management was due to start July 1, the beginning of a new fiscal year, but Chelgren said it was best to bring them back sooner.?They were awarded a five-year contract from 2015 to 2021, plus a two-year extension to 2023, if we continue to be satisfied with their trash pickup,” he said.Chelgren said residents? satisfaction looks promising.?Waste Management is a larger corporation, and they have more resources,” Chelgren said. “I anticipate we?ll continue to be satisfied with them. They know the town and have a good track record. It?s nice to have Waste Management back,” he said.
