NSCC’s Figueroa wins Newman Civic Fellow AwardJaime Figueroa of Lynn is the recipient of the national Newman Civic Fellow Award, presented to student leaders committed to creating lasting change. The honor is named for Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact and a tireless advocate for the role of higher education in preparing students for active and engaged citizenship. Figueroa just graduated from North Shore Community College and will enter Suffolk University this fall on a Dean’s Scholarship as a business administration transfer student with a concentration in corporate finance.At NSCC, Jaime was involved with many activities: president, National Society for Leadership and Success; vice president of the Student Government Association; student representative to CommUniverCity; and served on the following committees: Seeking Alternative Child Care for Students, Committee to Provide Equitable Access to Textbooks, Academic Affairs Governance and Civic Learning.An advocate for the underserved, Figueroa also organized coat and blood drives, volunteers serving at soup kitchens, advocates for homeless youth and tutors youth in math.Figueroa is also the recipient of the National Engaged Leader Award.”Jaime is a leader and fearless advocate for others. He is passionate about battling social challenges and is motivated to make a difference in the community at large,” said Cate Kaluzny, NSCC’s service learning coordinator. “I have no doubt that this is just the beginning of what Jaime is capable of and that he will continue to address the needs of people both locally and in the larger community.”Wallace receives NSCC’s 2015 Thomas Bourke Helping Hands AwardEdward “Drew” Wallace of Lynn received the Thomas Bourke Helping Hands Award at North Shore Community College’s 49th annual Student Service Awards Ceremony. This annual award honors a student who generously and unconditionally gives time to support and enhance the college community.The award is named for retired Dean of Students Thomas Bourke who, throughout his 27 years at NSCC, was a staunch supporter and advocate who devoted much of his professional career to the growth and expansion of the college.Passionately committed to making a difference in the lives of others, Wallace is a member of NSCC’s National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi, Program Council, Student Government, the Diversity Leadership Council and Recreation and Wellness. He has participated in the Leadership Ropes Course, Community College Student Leader Conferences, student focus groups and the student, faculty and staff basketball games.Wallace walked for HAWC to raise awareness about domestic violence, spoke at college Early Acceptance Dinners, greeted new students, volunteered at multiple induction ceremonies, assisted with commencement, NSCC’s Fit & Fun Health Fair and with this year’s launch of Spark, NSCC’s student art and literary magazine. He also volunteers in the community at the Lynn YMCA and coaching Pop Warner football games.”Drew is exuberant, thoughtful, respectful, conscientious and caring,” said Lisa Milso, director of student life. “He encourages and challenges himself and others to do better with each passing day. He is an amazing young man, student, friend and role model. He lights up a room with his illuminating smile and boundless energy, and is always ready to assist others.”Wallace is a graduate of the Class of 2015 and plans to study sports marketing at Bridgewater State University this fall.Library launches revival house-style film festivalThe days when “art houses” and revival theaters showed movies with funny names and subtitles are largely gone, but the Swampscott library is reviving the revival house with a film festival that began with a showing of Jean Cocteau’s “La Belle et la Bete” followed by an after-film discussion.Film forum organizer and library employee Cynthia Zeman said 26 people attended the showing.”The discussion was very lively,” Zeman said.The n
