The North Shore Navigators moved into a tie for first place in the FCBL East Division with a 5-2 win over the Bristol Blues at Fraser Field on Tuesday. The score was tied at two until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Navs exploded for three runs to win the game.
Navs’ pitcher Ryan McAuliffe (St. John’s University) continued his stretch of strong pitching, going 7 ? innings, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out four.
The Navs struck first in the bottom of the second when Giovanni Dingcong (St. Thomas Aquinas) hit an RBI double off the center field wall. Dingcong later scored on an RBI double from Keith Linnane (Northern Essex), giving North Shore a 2-0 lead.
The Blues tied the game with a run in both the fifth and the eighth, but the Navs didn’t let that last long.
In the bottom of the eighth, Sheldon Brogden (Lee) and Brandon Fischer (St. Thomas Aquinas) started the inning with a walk and a single, respectively. Then Chad Martin (Bowdoin) lined a bases-clearing double to put the Navs up by two. Martin then scored on an RBI double from M.J. Brown (Lee) to make it 5-2.That was all Navs’ closer Speros Varinos (Tufts) needed. He came in and pitched a scoreless ninth to secure his sixth save of the season and keep his ERA at 0.00 for the season.
