Baseball Roundup: A good day to play for Saugus

June 30, 2015 by Matthew Roy

They won a District 16 title as 10-year-olds and lost in extra innings as 11-year-olds last summer. Now Saugus American looks like it?s primed to make a run at yet another district title.
Doug Clark worked 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball and also drove in a pair of runs as the Americans survived a last-inning rally from Lynnfield to take a 5-2 win.
?That was a tough team we had to beat in Lynnfield,” Saugus American manager Mike Halley said. “They are a tough group of kids. I didn?t feel safe until we got the last out.”
Saugus was cruising along, leading 5-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before Lynnfield made things interesting.
Lynnfield?s Blake Peters ripped a two-run double to spoil Clark?s shutout bid as the American?s starter departed with two outs and the tying run at the plate. Owen Halley was able to get the last out.
?We couldn?t get the big hit when we needed it,” Lynnfield manager Steven Bond said. “We had plenty of opportunities.”
Clay Marenghi took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs early but shutting Saugus down before he departed. Lynnfield had several scoring opportunities, including loading the bases in the second but failing to score and another missed opportunity in the fifth.
Clark broke the game open in the top of the sixth when his two-run double gave Saugus its five-run cushion.

Joel Peabody and Dominic Clark combined on a no-hitter as the Saugus Babe Ruth 14-year-old team opened pool play with a victory. Peabody threw 1 1/3 innings but walked six. Clark took over with the bases loaded in the second and went the rest of the way.
Todd Tringale led the Saugus offense with three hits. Sean Doherty had a pair of hits and Christian Correia had a hit and an RBI.?We really played well,” Saugus assistant coach John Beliveau said. “We got solid defense and some real good hitting.”
