Baseball Roundup: Long balls lead Swampscott to win

July 2, 2015 by Matthew Roy

Swampscott?s offense didn?t speak softly on Thursday in its District 16 Little League elimination game against Nahant. It announced its presence with authority.
Cam O?Brien, Anthony Raukauskas, and Tyler Marshall all belted home runs as Swampscott stayed alive with a 12-0 victory over Nahant.
?We were able to get the bats going so that was nice to see,” Swampscott manager Joe Caponigro said.
All the run support that O?Brien, the Swampscott starter, needed came in the bottom of the first when Ruskaukas cranked a grand slam to help give his team a 5-0 lead.
Marshall got into the act in the bottom of the second as his three-run jack upped Swampscott?s lead to 8-0. After adding another run, O?Brien put the coup de gras on his day by smoking a three-run walk-off homer to invoke the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth.
?Swampscott just jumped on us early,” Nahant manager Adolph Graciale said.
O?Brien went the first 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Ruskaukas for the final 1 1/3 innings. Owen Maguire and Jay Cook each had a hit for Nahant while Drew Olivieri was 4-for-4 in the win for Swampscott.
Peabody White 4, Peabody West 3
The defending district champions were eliminated by their Tanner City rivals as Anthony Lemole and Ryan Bradley each had a solo homer for Peabody White, which scored a run in each of the first three innings.
Peabody West cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a two-run dinger from Patrick Hosman. Ryan Bradley?s RBI single in the fourth proved to be the winning run for Peabody White.
West cut the lead to 4-3 on a RBI groundout from John Anton and had the tying run at third with two outs in the sixth.
BABE RUTH 15s
Beverly/Salem 3, Peabody 2
In the opening game of the District 1 tournament, Peabody made a couple of small mistakes and it proved costly despite a solid game on the mound from Alex D?Angelo.Down by a run in the seventh, Cam Mastromatteo tripled for Peabody with one out. But the next two batters were retired to end the game.
