The North Shore Navigators fell to the Brockton Rox, 3-2, on Sunday at Fraser Field. Now 16-10, the Navigators remain in second place in the East division of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.
The Rox (13-10) got the scoring started in the second inning when Joe Drpich doubled to lead off and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Navigators took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Fischer (St. Thomas Aquinas) blooped a single over the second baseman’s head, scoring Giovanni Dingcong (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Maxx Sheehan (Franklin Pierce).
The Rox refused to back down as they struck with single markers in both the eighth and ninth innings to take a 3-2 lead.
The Navigators threatened in the ninth when they put the winning run on base, but the Rox closer was able to get pinch hitter Ricky Smith (Merrimack) to strike out to end the game.
Navs starter Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) went five innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out four.
It was a frustrating day for the Navigators as they left a total of eight runners on base, including two in the ninth inning.
Sunday’s loss marks the first time the Navigators have lost consecutive games since the third game of the season. The Navs were blanked by the Bristol Blues, 7-0, Saturday at Muzzy Field in Bristol, Conn.
The Navigators return to action Tuesday when they host the Pittsfield Suns. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
