Peabody White had flashed plenty of power against Peabody West last Thursday to stay alive in the District 16 Little League tournament. On Monday, Lynnfield?s Hayden Bond and Clay Marengi showed that great pitching will win out over a power-filled lineup more often than not.
Bond shut out Peabody for 5 2/3 innings before exiting after a Ryan Bradley homer. Marengi came on and recorded the final out to keep Lynnfield alive with a 3-1 win at James Street Park in Peabody.
?Hayden really pitched a great game. His manager made a bad call to throw a curveball to Bradley,” joked Lynnfield manager Steven Bond, Hayden?s father. “We played a really good game against a tough team.”
Bradley also threw a strong game for Peabody, allowing single runs in the first and third innings. Marengi then delivered a crushing blow for Lynnfield as his solo homer made it 3-0 after five innings.
That swing proved to be pivotal when Bradley went yard with two outs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to two. Marengi came on and the first two batters he faced reached base, putting the tying run at second. But he struck out the next man to seal the win.
?Scoring early was great for our confidence,” Bond said. “It was a good team effort.”
