A record 142 players turned out for the John Calder Memorial Golf tournament June 22 at Gannon Municipal Golf Course in Lynn.
Tournament winners were Mike Chalmers, Gary Beaver, Bill Maher and Dean Raymond.
The foundation was established in 1990 in memory of John Calder, an exceptional student-athlete who attended Sacred Heart School in Lynn, Dom Savio High School in East Boston and Framingham State College. He played sports all the way through and was captain of his college football team. John went on to play semi-professional football.
He worked for the Department of Revenue in Massachusetts after graduating college until his death in 1990. At age 28, he was killed in an ATV accident in New Hampshire. His family and friends founded the John Calder Foundation in his memory and have been raising money for 25 years to support many local youth programs and youth sports.
Every year the foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors who live in Lynn, are student-athletes and maintain good grades. In honor of the 25th anniversary of the foundation, 10 scholarships were awarded.
Scholarship winners include:Classical High School – Damien Earp, Kyle Morrill, Taylor Ferraro,
Ivy Martin; English High School – Anthony de la Cruz, Mildred Aguirre, Robert Comeau; St. Mary’s – Andrew Belliveau, Patrick Morin-Plante; Essex Tech – Jeremy Smalley.

The team of Ray Dyer, Mike Scuzzarella, Paul Kolodziej, and Chuck Carroll took first place in the A/B division of the Ouimet Scholarship Tournament over the holiday weekend at Gannon. Their two-day total of 120 was three shots better than three other teams.
The tournament serves as a fund-raiser for the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, which gives a scholarship to a male and female employee of the club that is a high school senior.
Steve Ross, Bill Benevento, John Griffith, and John Reppucci won a match of cards for second place. Bob Trepsas Jr., Jim Green, Kevin Kennnedy, and Steve Gorman were third with Bud McGonagle, Jim Tidmarsh, John Berg, and Frank Andreottola fourth.
Stan Glowacz, Paul Gorman, Doug Raleigh, and Ed Monahan were fifth in a match of cards.
In the C/D flight, Joe Della Russo, Frank Deiulis, Mike Timmons, and Grant Stockwell won with a score of 56. Tim Hall, Dick Aucone, Dan Holland, and John Markee were one stroke behind in second with Dennis McKee, Bill Wozny, Dan Blaney and Frank Spathanas in third (59).
Bonner crowned Gannon Ms. Liberty
The Gannon ladies also got into the act over Independence Day weekend as they held their Ms. Golden Liberty Tournament that also benefited the Ouimet Fund.
Carol Bonner won a four-way match of cards to take first place with a net score of 60. Second place went to Tara Friedman with Joyce Agganis in third and Elaine Faithful fourth.
The team tournament went to Cathy Thibeauly, Chris Lynch, Denise O’Connor, and Pat D’Angelo with a net score of 109. Taking second at 115 in a match of cards were Jane Fiste, Alana Pederson, Elaine Faithful, and Janet Wallace. Gina Mantino, Linda Courtemanche, Helen Sidman and Carol Bonner were third.
Junior golf clinic begins
The junior golf clinic at Gannon began Monday and will run for four more consecutive Mondays, ending on Aug. 3. The clinic is free and runs for one hour starting at 8 a.m. There is no registration and kids of all ages 18 and under are welcome.After the free clinic, kids can play nine holes for a $5 fee.
