MARBLEHEAD – A seven-run third inning pushed Marblehead past Swampscott, 10-0, in the Babe Ruth 13s All-Star tournament on Tuesday at Seaside Park.
Marblehead sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and every member of the lineup had a hit. Ryan Harris started things off with a double. Hits from Ben Brennan, Sebastian Fisichelli, and a big double from Emmet Janney plated five runs, and Ryan Masters, Harris, and T.J. Zagarri helped produce the final two runs of the inning.
Marblehead jumped out to an early lead it wouldn?t relinquish, as Zagarri singled and scored on a wild pitch and Brennan singled and scored on Jared Maude?s RBI single. Janney scored on Jack Bentley?s single to end the game in the sixth because of the 10-run mercy rule.
?We came ready to play with a lot of intensity and played good, solid, clean baseball, which is exactly what we want the kids to do, and they had fun,” said Marblehead coach Jac Bentley.
Every member of the Marblehead squad reached base at least once. Harris was on three times with two hits and a walk. Maude walked and singled, and Fisichelli went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Fisichelli was back on the hill for Marblehead after starting against Lynn on Monday. But he didn?t let the workload bother him, pitching four shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.
He ran into a little bit of trouble in the fourth as Nick Reiser singled, but Zagarri, the catcher, caught Reiser stealing third for the second out of the inning. The Swampscott team got a single from Jonathan Onahki and a two-out walk from Tony Conigliaro, but couldn?t capitalize on the opportunity.
Swampscott threatened again in the sixth with Brennan on the hill for Marblehead. Evan DiPietro drew a leadoff walk and Reiser singled, but Brennan sent the next three batters down in order.
?Both (of our pitchers) pitched very well,” said Bentley. “(Fisichelli) is our workhorse. He did a great job over the last couple of games. We played a very good Swampscott team today, we?ve played them in the regular season, most of these players, many times. So we know each other well.”
The Swampscott All-Stars dropped to 0-3 in the tournament, and will take on Danvers on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Seaside Park in their final game of the All-Star tournament.
Marblehead picks up its first win in the tournament and will look to keep that momentum rolling in its final game, at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Peabody at Marblehead High School.
?They just played good, solid baseball today,” said Bentley. “They didn?t really make any errors and they hit the ball, and that?s what we?ve been looking for this whole week. It was great.”Katie Morrison may be reached at [email protected]. Follow her on Twitter @KatieMo61.
