After going 1-2 over the weekend, the North Shore Navigators sit at 19-14 on the season and are now tied for second place in the Eastern Division of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.
The Navs rallied late but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to the Bristol Blues Sunday in Bristol, Conn.
The Blues got the bats going early and often against Navigators pitcher Steve Xirinachs (UMass Lowell) as they scored all of their five runs in the first inning.
The Navigators started to chip away at the deficit in the second inning when MJ Brown (Lee) led off with a single. After advancing to second on a putout, Brown scored on an RBI single by Maxx Sheehan (Franklin Pierce) to make it 5-1. Sheehan later scored on a RBI double by Brandon Fischer (St. Thomas Aquinas).
The Navs would break into the run column again in the top of the eighth inning when Fischer singled home Tanner Bush (UNC Asheville) and Sheehan.
But that was the end of the scoring, as the Blues bullpen shut the door to preserve the win.
The Navs started the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks at Fraser Field. After dropping a close 2-1 decision in the opener, the Navs scored twice in the sixth inning of the nightcap to secure a much-needed 2-1 victory.
Designated hitter Kyle Devin (Rhode Island) and third baseman Brown had RBIs in the sixth inning of the win.
The Navs got the scoring going in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. After Fischer hit a one-out single, Sharks starter Chris Weiss (Hofstra) walked a batter and hit another to set up a sacrifice fly from Devin.
The Sharks quickly tied the score in the third as catcher Domenic De Renzo (Oklahoma) drew a walk to lead off against Navs starter Tim Superko (Tufts) and scored on an RBI single to center field by second baseman Jack Roberts (Williams).
Superko walked five Sharks batters in his fifth start for the Navs but allowed just four hits and one unearned run over 4 ? innings.
The Sharks left two runners on base in the fifth against North Shore reliever Trevor Massey (Boston College), but they went ahead in the following frame as left fielder Kevin Brice (Pomona-Pitzer) tripled to right field and scored on shortstop Garet Griffin’s (Franklin Pierce) sacrifice fly to center field.
Mike Parmentier (Norfolk State) recorded the final five outs to lock down his third save of the summer for the Sharks.
The Sharks had three hits over the first two innings of the nightcap, but John Lavoie (St. Anselm) worked out of both threats. Third baseman Bobby San Martin (James Madison) continued a solid day in the third as his two-out RBI single was his third hit of the doubleheader and gave Martha’s Vineyard a 1-0 lead.
Matthew Tulley (Rollins) struck out 10 while allowing just two runs on three hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work, but the Navigators tagged Parmentier for a pair of runs in the sixth inning of the second game.
North Shore sent seven batters to the plate and scored twice on three hits in the sixth. Second baseman Richie Fecteau (Salem State) singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored the tying run on Devin’s bloop single into shallow left field.
Sheehan came on to pinch run for Devin at first base, stole second and came around to score on a hard RBI double off the bat of Brown.
Rob DiFranco (Bates) earned his first win back with the Navigators as he relieved Lavoie with 1 ? scoreless innings. Speros Varinos (Tufts) struck out one Shark in a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his seventh save of the summer.
The Navigators return to action on Tuesday when they host the Pittsfield Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
