MARBLEHEAD – The Peabody bats struck early and often to defeat Lynn, 12-7, to clinch the District 1 13-year-old Babe Ruth championship Sunday at Seaside Park.
Jake Murphy pitched a complete game for Peabody and also delivered at the plate, knocking in a run and scoring three times.
?We played a very tough Lynn team tonight that handled us last time,” said Peabody coach Chip Guiney. “So it was good to jump out to a big lead and hold it the whole time. It was good to get the timely hitting when we needed it.”
Third baseman Calvin Ingemi paced Peabody?s offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman Mike Sabino also had two RBIs.
Peabody got on the board early. After starting the top of the first with a single, a walk, and a passed ball, runners stood on second and third with no outs. Shortstop Angelo McCullough scored on a passed ball on the next pitch. Then Ingemi lined an RBI single to left and scored on a fielder?s choice, building a 3-0 lead.
Lynn answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Marcus Tucker and Andy Duverge led off with back-to-back singles, then second baseman Will Hunter lined an RBI double to left center to put Lynn on the board. Centerfielder Aubrey Connors followed with an RBI single, then Miguel Acosta executed a perfect hit-and-run to score another run. Matt Devin followed with an RBI groundout and all of a sudden Lynn was on top, 4-3.
The lead didn?t last long, as Peabody picked up two runs in the top of the second thanks to an error and RBIs from Murphy and Ingemi.
Peabody grabbed another run on a passed ball in the top of the third, making it 6-4. Lynn came back in the bottom of the third with another run thanks to an RBI double from Acosta, cutting the deficit to one. But that?s as close as it got.
Peabody loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and capitalized. After catcher Taidon Perez knocked an RBI single, three runs were forced in on walks, giving Peabody a 10-5 lead.
Lynn scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Peabody added insurance runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Meanwhile, Murphy was able to keep the Lynn hitters off balance.
?He never really gave them much of a chance up there,” Guiney said of Murphy. “Very impressive win tonight.”
